For five of those, Agent Jane Browne has already played her part in this game as well. But now, a threat is aimed at herself and the few she cares about. The mysterious 'M' might find out it's not a good idea to tease a Knight Agent in general - and much less of a good idea to tease Agent Browne in person.

“I am indeed very dangerous, but I am a dedicated Knight Agent as well. I have sworn to protect mankind and civilisation. To really rob you would be to stomp on everything I believe in. I’d rather die than do that.” Sometimes you need a thief to catch a thief. Sometimes you need a criminal organisation to catch a criminal organisation. Jane Browne and her team make a great criminal organisation, if they want to. From the cold-blooded criminal mastermind over the risk-seeking right hand to the mercenary leader, the getaway driver, the secretary, and the engineer, they have what is needed. As supposed criminals, they are looking for a kidnapped scientist and trying to protect his family. And as if that isn’t enough, Jane also has been chosen as Maid of Honour for the wedding of her friend Myra. Unfortunately, the future mother-in-law is a monster-in-law who doesn’t accept the facts. Balancing her official and her real life was never harder for Jane, but one thing seems sure: sometimes crime does indeed pay.

“I do my very best to keep my lives apart. This is only the second time they have ever crossed … and it never was my choice to have them meet in any way.” Jane Browne works hard to keep her two lives apart - the rich heiress and the ruthless Knight Agent. Now they meet for the second time and this time on a far more personal level than during the Morrigan situation. When she is called in as a scout and assassin to help rescue the victim of a kidnapping, things turn out to be far more personal than she would have wanted them to. Can she unravel the intrigue which threatens her best friend’s life? Can she take down the key pieces of the enemies and bring them to justice?

“Just think about what you could do to him … that should keep you entertained.” A little favour for Sir Abraham Mortimer, head of the Board of Associates Jane is sitting on for the Knight Agency, turns into a large-scale adventure introducing the Uncle and the Niece. For a change, Jane needs to rely on her more discreet skills such as seduction and acting to find out what is happening. Also included are: a spectral monk haunting the grounds of an old manor house, kidnappings, daring deeds, a budding love affair, and, of course, a plague of rogues.

“But we can do more … we can do so much more than just gather information. We all have a second skill to offer and we’re rarely asked to use it.” Times are changing, for Jane personally and for the Knight Agency as a such. While Jane learns what it is like to have found your soul mate, the other female agents want to leave traditions behind. As Jane grows more comfortable with Cedric and meets his family (for the first time ever in her life), an old colleague of Steven and Sir Frederic and a new threat (which might not be that new) surface. It becomes perfectly clear that only constant evolution will keep the Knight Agency on top of the game. Times are changing and everyone has to change with them, face new challenges and new enemies. The Knight Agency is getting ready and Jane is getting ready along with it.

"We're too late. But, believe me, you'll want to see this." Something is going on in high society. Even though Jane had other things to do recently, she's felt it. Elitists are on the rise, looking down on 'new money' as well as on those they think are below them. And they're not just looking. When young women who might have had the chance to marry into high society are kidnapped and horribly killed, Jane starts to hunt those who are doing it. And when they make the mistake of threatening what is dear to Jane herself, her rage is only too happy to assist her with the hunt. But Jane is not the only hunter in this case, someone else is following traces as well, shadowing people. But Jane and Steven wouldn't be one of the best teams of the Knight Agency, if they couldn't draw a shadow out into the sun. In the end, the grave diggers are digging their own graves.

“I am a hitman only to be matched by few.” Having taken out two of the leading numbers is not enough for the Knight Agency. Even though she is technically the wrong gender, Jane Browne is sent out to pretend to be a budding hitman to get closer to the American branch of the Syndicate. In the guise of stoic Alex Stone, she does what she has to do to convince her possible future employer that she is the person he is looking for - a hitman with the abilities he wants. Two American colleagues have already blown their job interview, but Jane will do better, even if it kills her - or several other people. Not all is well in the American office, either, but that is only a matter on the side, as is the return of the monster-in-law.

"They kept me drugged for two days!" The fallout from the elitist movement has barely settled when Jane is kidnapped and finds herself in a burning house, escaping only because of her training as an agent. Staying dead for a while, she finally results to goading the kidnappers into trying it again. Yet this is but the first step into a world where people believe that sacrifices have to be made and young women from high society make the best sacrifices. But is this all or is there more to it? Jane has to dive deep into a strange cult to find the truth hidden well within the lies.
