In tempi lontanissimi viveva un re che aveva dietro il suo castello un gran giardino di divertimento nel quale sorgeva un albero che dava mele d’oro. Allorchè i frutti furono maturi, vennero contati, ma subito la mattina dopo ne mancava uno. Ciò fu riferito al re, ed egli ordinò che la notte il melo fosse vegliato. Questo re aveva tre figli; al cadere della notte mandò il primo a guardia dell’albero, ma quando fu mezzanotte, il principe fu colto da grave sonno e s’addormentò: la mattina di poi un altro frutto mancava. Nella notte seguente dovè vegliare il secondo figliuolo, ma anche a questo accadde lo stesso; come battè mezzanotte s’addormentò profondamente e la mattina c’era di meno un’altra mela. La terza notte toccò a vegliare al principe minore che era tutto contento di stare in sentinella, ma il re non se ne fidava e credeva che a lui sarebbe accaduto anche di peggio. Come fu l’ora di andare a montare la guardia, egli si mise sotto il melo e stette tutta la notte ad occhi spalancati senza che il sonno lo vincesse.
