1 Nouns

Gender of nouns

There is no fix rule to determine the gender of a German noun. However, although there are exceptions, the following endings can give you a hint about the gender of a noun.

Feminine:

The endings –e, -ie, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ung, -tät, -anz, -enz, -ion, -tur, -ei, -ik suggest in most cases, that a noun is feminine (die).

Neutral:

The endings –o, -chen, -lein, -ment, -nis, -tum, -um, -ium as well as the prefix Ge- suggest in most cases, that a noun is neutral (das).

Masculine:

The endings –ner, -ismus suggest in most cases, that a noun is masculine (der).
