    About the Author

    Introduction

From the moment we enter this world until the day we leave it, there are external forces at work trying to shape our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Some are benign. Some are beneficial. Some are neither benign or beneficial.

Early on, parents and teachers attempt to mold our worldview. There are also the efforts of organized religion, our peers, politicians and the ever-increasing presence of media in our lives.

I read somewhere recently that in the 1970’s the average person was exposed to about 500 advertising messages a day. In present times that number has increased tenfold, it’s now around 5,000. In the US alone some $200 billion dollars are spent annually to get you to buy someone else’s stuff or to accept their political opinion. Can you say MANIPULATION boys and girls?

These influences form what becomes our inner voice or self-talk, which pretty much runs the show for us and how we experience life. How much of it is us and how much of it is them? It is kind of hard to tell sometimes.

This atmosphere of mass influence would not be so concerning if it was directing us in a mostly positive and empowered direction. However, its well known that negative emotion draws attention.

We are drawn like moths to a flame when it comes to news and social media reports of how evil those people are or when some terrible tragedy occurs.

Even seemingly innocent ads imply that you won’t be truly happy until you buy X, Y or Z. Contentment is the enemy of consumption and that just won’t do in a commercially driven culture. It just won’t do!

"When I’m watching my TV, and a man comes on and tells me how white my shirts can be. But he can’t be a man because he does not smoke the same cigarettes as me, I can’t get NO SATISFACTION!"

    -Mick Jagger
