Introduction
This book is about getting more creative work done, more effectively, and with less stress. I’d like to get to the actual advice, but this is also the kind of book that requires an explanation. Some things are easier when you get the why
behind them.
In 2017, I started writing a novel; not remarkable as I’d been writing for decades, but remarkable in that it was my return to fiction after a long absence. I had written books on careers and creativity, but it was time to do something else.
As many of my friends and I were working on creative projects at home and/or at work, I wondered how to do such things better. As I had been trained and had used Agile methods and approaches, I decided to use them on my novel and elsewhere.
Of course at this point you, dear reader, fall into one of two categories. You either know what Agile is or you don’t. If you do, you can skip the next section.
If not, let’s have a quick aside on Agile. Trust me, it’s worth it.

You’ve probably heard of Agile if you have any contact with Project Management, organization, productivity, etc. I like to say Agile is a Philosophy of productivity, embodied in Methods of how to do things.
Its history, in a format condensed enough that Agile professionals like myself won’t argue over it too much, is as follows:
A lot of management and productivity techniques have been top-town – orders, schedules, hierarchy, etc. Build a plan, stick with it, drive from the top.
For the last few decades of the 20th century (and informally throughout human history), people also have known this whole plan-it-then-try-it method doesn't work. They’ve tried to create other ways to be productive.
Software blew the lid off of a need to find new ways to organize. Software turns all the problems in making anything up to eleven: it's fast, it's variable, it's evolving. The efforts to deal with these challenges were called Agile.
In 2001, a whole bunch of Agile people met at a resort to discuss this and produced the Manifesto For Agile Software Development, often called the Agile Manifesto (agilemanifesto.org). They also detailed the 12 Principles behind the manifesto.
