About this ebook

The town of Agua Caliente, or the English equivalent, Hot Water, lay baking in the fierce noonday sun. Too close to the Mexican border for safety, too far from the Texas Rangers for security, it was a tiny west Texas town pretty much on its own.
Five men filed out of the adobe brown jailhouse. They were leashed like animals, a noose around the neck and snug, then on to the next, repeating until all five were kept under control.
They each were helpless with hands tied tightly behind their backs. Four were dressed in dungarees, sweated gray woolen shirts, and neckerchiefs in place, around the rope. The fifth had woolen trousers and a better shirt, a silk neckerchief. Each had feet encased in tired boots, with thick heels worn half away. They were workman, cattle handlers, cowboys and... rustlers. Most of them.
The look on four out of the five was resignation. The fifth had his head high, his steel gray eyes taking in everything... with an element of contempt. He was a tall man, a saddle tested man who was used to giving orders. And he did not belong here with these men.
Ahead of them, a Deputy Sheriff led the string. It had been a chore to put up five hanging trees on the town square, but those in charge brooked no nonsense. The Deputy saw to the construction and it was done in record time. And, it was done right. Sheriff Brook Hollander, or those behind him, would accept nothing less.
Hollander waited on the top of the scaffolding for the prisoners to climb the thirteen steps.
As each man made it to the top, he was led to a position under a deadlier rope. The nooses were exchanged. Some of the men had tears, some were grim. One was deceptively cool, but his eyes spoke volumes...
When all five were in position, the hangman brought out a black canvas hood for each. He waited while Sheriff Hollander read the decree.
“You are found guilty of treason, cattle rustling, drunkenness and the beating to death of Preacher Hope Wilson. You have all been condemned to death by hanging. You have one minute to say your prayers before I carry out your execution.
A minute later, he went to the first four, one by one, and one man sobbed, two snarled a hateful thing, and the fourth pleaded for his life. Then, he asked the big man, “Anything to say, to clear your way to Hell?”
Below the platform, in a knot of people, stood the Judge that had falsely accused him, then made it a point to steal his life. He looked only at the Judge, ignoring the fat, useless Sheriff.
“Kin.” He said it calmly, though the threat in the eyes was directed at the Judge. The big man eschewed the hood. Screw ‘em! Let ‘em watch!
Five men died that day, on the stroke of noon. Smiling in triumph, the Judge and his sons turned away, climbed up on buckboards, each pulled by a pair of oddly red eyed black horses and headed home.
