    Stella glared at the customers in Booth 4. Food was flying in every direction. A burger flipped up in the air. Spaghetti hit the neon-infused glass that faced the Ave., adding more texture to the glaring headlights and drizzling rain. The clitter clatter of ice cubes hitting the floor undercut the din of conversations across the diner. Happy summer.

    She hated Labyrinthians. On their home planet they ate only liquids. But as tourists on Earth, they wanted to try everything. They didn’t have any of the right appendages to eat hamburgers, let alone spaghetti. She’d have to deep clean the booth after they left.

    Number 20’s up, yelled Joe, the cook and owner of Joe’s Milky Way Cafe.

    Where was Genevieve? She was supposed to be here half an hour ago to help out with the dinner rush. Probably out on a job interview, the little bitch. Genevieve had it made. She had youth, upper middle class parents, and was pretty too. Genevieve was only working her way through college and she’d conned Joe into giving her the schedule she wanted.

    Stella, on the other hand, would probably be working at Joe’s until the end of time.

    She’d never had any of those advantages. Stella worked so she could eat and have a place to live. And if tips were really good, she could go out on the town once a month.
