    WHY NEWPORT?

    There are two wildly divergent sides to Newport that have always fascinated me.

    On the one hand you have the quaint cobblestone streets lined with galleries, shops, cafés, stores filled with artisanally-crafted wares, tacky tourist traps, the port area where you’re reminded that this was a place as connected to the sea as any weather-beaten town on the Maine Coast.

    And then on the other hand, you have the cottages, as the wealthy robber barons of the Gilded Age quaintly called their mega-mansions that make this town unique in all the world.

    Back before the 1920s, you could walk up Fifth Avenue and see humongous townhouses owned by some the same families that built these summer cottages in Newport (most of which were occupied only for one or two months a year). Most of these houses were designed in
