Uchronian Tales: A Glimpse At Parallel Worlds Book 1

About this ebook
I have been writing as a hobbyist for some time, but this is actually my very first ever published book.
As a fan of alternate history going back over a decade, I have long wanted to publish my own stories to share with the world, though only recently have I actually gotten the opportunity to do so. My discovery of flash fiction truly was a proverbial lifesaver; this format allowed me to write more freely without necessarily having to worry about super-deep worldbuilding that might have been required in full-length stories.
Generally, these stories do vary somewhat in their focus on the pure "alternative history" aspect; some are fairly well invested in the divergences themselves(i.e., what if the U.S. had annexed more Mexican territory), while in others, they take a bit more of a backseat to the general storytelling.

Hi there! I'm a longtime alternate history aficionado from Texas who's been writing for a while, but just recently got into the world of publishing. I'm still a novice in terms of actual writing, so any helpful critiques and/or encouragement would be highly appreciated.

A Glimpse At Parallel Worlds
Book 1
By Steve Ladd
Foreword
Hello, and thank you, dear reader, for choosing to purchase this book. For those who may be new to the Alternate History-or AH for short-literary genre, you may be wondering: Just what is alternate history, anyway? Well, to put it all in a nutshell, it goes kinda like this; many of us learned about historical events in school, am I right? For example, Americans from a young age are taught about things like the American Revolution, the Civil War, etc., just to name a few of the most important local topics, on top of more general things such as the World Wars, and so on.
But as long as there has been history, there have always been at least a few people who've dared to ask, What if?
, as in What if the Patriots had lost the Revolutionary War?
, or What if Abraham Lincoln had lived?
, just to name a few. And then there have been those who have even wondered what it might be like just to live in a different universe, period, including in all honesty, yours truly. And thus, why this growing genre is called Alternate History
.
I've been fairly heavily involved in the AH fan community for about a decade now myself, but although I've been coming up with many story ideas since then, this would be the first time I've actually published anything for profit, and this book is basically an anthology of 12 different flash fiction stories I wrote in 2018. I originally got into flash fiction partly as an attempt to sharpen my writing skills, though I also realized that it could potentially proverbial creative juices flowing more freely, and hence, the idea for this E-Book was born.
These stories do vary somewhat in their actual focus on the History
part of Alternate History-with some it's fairly prominent, and with others it takes more of a backseat, with the differences from our world serving mainly only as a backdrop. I also made an effort to write stories set in many different places all across the world, and not just in a few select areas.
In any case, I do hope my readers enjoy this book.....

Story #1: A Quebecer's Stay In Paris.....
New Paris, France
July 9th, 1962
Jacques Pressler walked around the streets of New Paris[1] on this fine summer morning, with the intention of seeing as much of the city as he could in one day. Born in Quebec, the son of a shoe salesman and a woman who was the daughter of French immigrants, Jacques had felt a connection to his grandparents' home country from a rather young age. Now in college, the 22 year old doctoral student had the chance to explore the wonders of France firsthand, and this was his first day visiting New Paris. He eventually found a nice place to sit down and relax, and on his way, grabbed a free brochure from one of the city's dozen museums.
Jacques, though he'd packed a few books from home to read on his trip, had his interest piqued by the front cover of the brochure; on the bottom, it said, Learn about the modern history of the French Republic!
, in half a dozen different languages, not just French and English, but also Italian, German, Spanish and even Japanese[2]. And so, he began to read the brochure. It went over a basic overview of the post 1800 history of the French nation, from the Bourbon coup in 1818, and the end of slavery in 1847, to the Great European War[3] and the rebuilding of France from the ground up, including the building of New Paris, out of the ashes and ruins of the old city.
Intrigued, Jacques decided to change his midday travel plan a bit, to go visit a few of the places mentioned in the brochure. Upon his last stop, he paid a brief visit to the Memorial of the Fallen[4], which had been erected in memory of the French, Belgian, British, Italian, American, Spanish, Swiss, and Scandinavian soldiers who had all died during the European War, and the names of all of the 70,000 men from all these nations, plus a number of others as well, who had died defending Paris during the Great Siege of late 1906 and early 1907[5], were enscribed on the
