About the Author
Chapter 1
I looked into the mirror and couldn’t help but notice the lumps on my shoulder blades. They weren’t because I was skinny and bony they actually looked like something was trying to tear out from under my skin.
I touched them. They didn’t hurt. What was really strange was that my twin brother had them too! They were even in the same place.
Was this some sort of genetic deformity? I didn’t know my mom and dad. So who knows?
My grandmother has been acting strange. She won’t take her eyes off the clock. She also keeps checking the calendar and watching the phases of the moon. Something must be going on or she is starting to lose her mind.
I am having difficulty sleeping tonight because of these lumps on my back. I close my eyes and toss and turn. Then I am abruptly woken by terrible pain.
I cry out in despair as I feel my skin ripping. I stumble from the bed and fall to the floor. I can hear my brother screaming in his room next to mine.
As I crawl on the floor I can’t help but notice something soft rubbing my back.
I reach my arm back and feel…..feathers?
Ok maybe now I am losing it!
I feel again. Feathers…. Why do I feel feathers on my back?
Ignoring the pain I make it to the bathroom. I pull myself up, holding the counter so I can look into the mirror.
I close my eyes and pinch myself. Ouch!
Ok I am not dreaming.
I open my eyes and look at my reflection. There are large wings behind me made up of white feathers. I turn around and look. Where the lumps were once on my back I now have wings protruding through!
I scream and fall backwards hitting the side of the tub, only it didn’t hurt I landed on something soft. Oh right it must have been my wings.
I pinch myself again this time harder. I scream that really hurt.
What is it Jade?
my grandmother asks peeking into the bathroom. Then she puts her hand over her mouth when she sees me. Oh it is time we must go now, please pack a few things, but you won’t need much
she said looking at me.
Grandma what’s going on? Do you know what this means?
I ask her checking to see if the wings are still there. They are.
She doesn’t answer.
Jax, my brother walks into the bathroom where I still am. He looks at his reflection in the mirror and then closes his eyes and grabs the counter trying to balance.
Is he going to faint?
He has no shirt on and I can see wings coming from his back too.
He looks at me with confusion in his eyes and all I can do is return his gaze. I have no idea what’s going on.
Children hurry up we don’t have much time
grandmother hollered again.
I go to my room and put a few keepsakes into my backpack. Then I throw a few t-shirts inside wondering how they are going to fit.
The shirt I have on has ripped and my wings are popping out. I take it off and put on another. I have two huge lumps under my shirt and at the very bottom feathers are peeking out.
I tuck them into my pants. Ouch!
It feels like someone is pulling my hair. I pull on a feather. Pain travels through me again.
Great now I can feel these things
I sigh.
I keep telling myself to wake up but it’s not happening
Jax says.
I haven’t spoken a word to my brother since waking up with wings. I don’t know what to say. I keep hoping this is all some really freaky dream. You can wake up anytime now I think to myself.
Hurry children!
our grandmother calls from downstairs.
We hurry down and see her waiting by the door.
We quickly get into the car and our grandmother hits the gas making the car squeal.
I quickly reach for my seat belt and put it on.
Has she told you anything about what’s going on?
Jax whispered.
No
I say quietly.
Grandmother pulls up to the park in our neighborhood where there are nature trails. She stops and gets out of the car.
We have never come here at night. It is pitch black and hard to see anything.
She shines a flash light and we stumble behind her along the path of the nature trail.
Walk quickly and follow me
she says.
The air was cold and I could see my breath as we walked. We walked and walked stumbling over tree roots and getting smacked in the face by low tree branches. Then we noticed a light coming from further up the trail.
Almost there
she says in a whisper.
Jax looks at me but doesn’t say anything.
The light gets brighter and I can see it coming from between the trees causing shadows to dance all around us.
It turns from a white light to colorful lights dancing about. The closer we get the brighter it becomes. I shield my eyes with my hand. I can’t pinpoint where exactly this light is coming from or what is making it.
Then I can just make out that the light is coming from a tree. I always thought this tree was strange. I used to stare at it when we walked these trails together.
Grandmother takes Jax’s hand and holds it then grabs my hand with her other.
She pushes us towards the tree. We are so close I’m afraid we are going to hit it.
I wait to feel the impact but it doesn’t come. I hold my breath and finally build up enough courage to open my eyes. Everything is dark but everywhere I look in the distance I see small stars.
I find myself wondering if we are up in space.
Then things start to speed up. Everything around me becomes a blur. I just catch a glimpse out of the corner of my eye, something blue and green. Is that the earth? That couldn’t be possible could it?
I look over at my brother and he is grinning. Then I look at grandmother she is smiling and there is a small tear in her eye.
I stop and look. Things have begun to slow down around us. I feel weightless. Colors come into focus. There are blues, greens, and purples swirling around me.
I see the stars again but this time they are glowing. Everything seems brighter and more vivid. I get a strange feeling and it overtakes me. I remember this place. It feels so peaceful, have I been here before perhaps in a dream?
A black circle appears before us with a purple light shining behind it. As it gets closer I realize it is a planet.
So we really are up in space?
How can we breathe right now?
Before I have time to process these thoughts I realize we are on the other side of the light, the same one that came from the tree. I look behind me in the direction we just came from. I see a tree and colorful lights swirling around it. I feel my body again the feeling of weightlessness is gone.
Had we really just traveled all that way through a tree?
Looking forward I see that we are standing on a wooden boardwalk. It leads into another set of woods.
I can’t help but look behind me one more time. The light behind the tree is swirling in white spirals now and then it disappears into nothing leaving a simple ordinary tree.
That trip is always exciting but a bit scary being so high up
grandmother said laughing. I know I have a lot of explaining to do, but please let it wait until we get home.
Jax looked at me and I shook my head in confusion.
Home?
I reach back and sure enough the wings are still there peeking out of the bottom of my shirt.
Jax moved his shoulders a bit and then took off his shirt. He stretched out his wings and then looked like he was about to test them.
Not now my boy it isn’t as easy as it appears
grandmother says.
Jax put his shirt back on and sighed. Can you at least tell me where we are?
Welcome to the land of Adanya, your true home
grandmother said.
I look over at my brother wide eyed. We had always joked about aliens and other planets but to think that we may have come from one?
What are we then?
I ask.
Are we aliens?
Jax asks.
Grandmother laughs. No Jade, Jax, you are not aliens, you are Feather Wings.
Just like that she says we are feather wings…what is she talking about? I am so confused and tired. I just want to go home and snuggle with my pillow right now.
Yeah I can see that we have feathered wings all of a sudden which is crazy but what are our kind called?
Jax questioned.
They are called Feather Wings
grandmother repeated.
That’s kind of a simple name
Jax says. At least you didn’t say we were some sort of fairy creature.
Again grandmother laughs, Well for the sake of your manliness Jax I left that part out.
You mean we are fairies? Oh great, are there anymore boys like me or am I the one and only freak?
Jax asks angrily.
There are plenty more like you, but the boys prefer to be called Feather Wings, while the girls call themselves Feather Winged Fairies
she said.
Jax still didn’t seem pleased and he marched off a little ahead of us as we walked.
Jax I wouldn’t go too far ahead we have no idea where we are
I call to him.
Oh shut up Jade
he answers.
I scrunch my nose up and shake my head.
I find myself thinking that I am relieved there are more ‘feather wings’ out there and that I am going to meet some.
Can I ask where we are going?
I say.
We are going home and then perhaps tomorrow we will go see your new school
grandmother answers.
I look over at my brother and he shakes his head neither of us likes school very much. The thought of going to a new one and starting over doesn’t sound fun at all.
A little time passed and the trail widened and split into two roads. The roads were formed from large stones that cracked and wobbled under our feet as we walked on them. We took the road to the right.
I’m sure you are wondering where the other road leads. The road to the left is the way to the town Delmara and this road that we are on is the way to the town Kesare, where your family is from
grandmother said.
Do we have parents? I mean will we meet them now?
Jax asked getting excited.
"No I’m afraid the stories about your parents are true. They are not still with us in this present time. They died in the time of war, but now
