About this ebook

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)

There has never been a better time to win souls to Christ than at childhood level. According to Proverbs chapter 22:6 there are various ways open to children as they grow but as parents and the community at large, we have a responsibility to train them the right way to go.

The effect of social media, advancement in information technology and globalisation in general has provided children with a whole array of different ways to go, some of which have a potential to wreak havoc on their spiritual fabric. As custodians of the church of tomorrow, they are at great risk of losing their faith altogether and plunge it into oblivion.

This book which is a combination of storytelling, biblical black and white images and end of chapter questions, provides early learners with an in-depth and interactive learning resource to study the word of God. The book comes in two parts: Book 1 and Book 2.

Young children will find the book useful in exercising their technical skills in colouring as they also learn the word of God.

    CHAPTER 1

THE STORY OF ADAM AND EVE

God created everything that we see today in a period of six days and on the seventh day He rested. He created the man on the sixth day out of the dust of the earth. However, the man was not complete in that form so God breathed His Spirit and the man became a living soul. The man was created in the image and likeness of God and he enjoyed everlasting life on earth. This man was called Adam.

Soon after creation, Adam was placed in the Garden of Eden. He was given free will to eat the fruit of any tree in the garden but he was forbidden from eating of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God warned Adam of the consequences of breaking this law. So Adam knew from the beginning what would happen to him if he disobeyed God, just as we do today.

Although God put Adam in charge of all the animals and birds, he led a very lonely life. Adam did not have a companion of his own kind to keep him company. When God saw how lonely Adam was, He caused him to go into a deep sleep. While he slept, God took one rib from his body and He used it to make a woman. God then presented the woman to Adam. Adam was very excited about what God had done and he could not hide his joy when he saw Eve:

"Then the man said, ‘This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman because she was taken out of Man.’" (Genesis 2:23)

Adam gave the woman the name Eve, which means ‘mother of all living’ and they both enjoyed each other’s company in the Garden of Eden.

During that time, there also lived in the same garden a serpent, an animal which was more clever than all the other animals. The serpent was evil and cunning. It used subtle ways of deception in its role as the devil’s agent.

One day it saw Eve and decided to talk to her. The serpent asked her whether it was true that God had forbidden them from eating of the fruit of every tree in the garden. Eve’s response to the serpent showed that she knew what God had commanded them about the tree which was in the middle of the garden. Her response also showed that she knew what would happen to her if she ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. However, she decided to listen to the lies of the serpent.

The serpent was encouraged by Eve’s willingness to participate in the discussion, and so Eve was deceived into believing that she would not die if she ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. With that deception, Eve looked at the fruit of the tree and noticed three things:

"So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate." (Genesis 3:6)

Adam disobeyed God by eating from the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and this disobedience brought sin into the world.

God was very disappointed by what Adam had done. He punished the three creatures, with each one them receiving a punishment according to their individual disobedience to God.

God cursed the serpent above all other animals; he condemned it to move on its belly and eat dust for the rest of its life. He multiplied Eve’s pain in child bearing and the man was made to rule over her.

God was very angry with Adam because he had listened to his wife instead of obeying His command not to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He cursed the ground and made Adam work harder on it. God also made the ground produce much less fruit than it did while he was in the Garden of Eden. Lastly, He terminated his everlasting life by saying to him:

"In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground. for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return." (Genesis 3:19)

Soon after passing judgement on the three, God chased Adam and Eve out of the garden. God feared that if the two stayed in the garden, they would eat from the tree of life, be like Him and live forever in their sinful nature. He placed an angel and a flaming sword to guard the garden.

    CHAPTER 2

    CAIN KILLS ABEL

Cain and Abel were the first two sons of Adam and Eve. They grew up to adulthood as the only children of Adam and Eve, well before the birth of many other children.

There was a time when the two went before God with their sacrifices. Cain made an offering from his produce as a farmer while Abel made an offering from his animals as a shepherd. Abel made his offering from the firstlings of his animals.

When God looked at their sacrifices, he accepted Abel’s offering but He did not have any regard for the offering from Cain. Cain was not happy with God’s decision: evil crept into him and he vowed to kill his younger brother, Abel. He waited for an opportune moment to exercise his evil intention.

One day he invited Abel to go out into the field and he accepted, oblivious to his brother’s motive. When they got to the field, Cain wielded a sword against his unsuspecting brother and killed him. God saw what Cain had done and made an immediate enquiry to find out whether he would tell the truth.

Cain did not show remorse for what he had done, and he became very rude when God enquired as to the whereabouts of his brother.

"Then the LORD said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother? He said, I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper? (Genesis 4:19)

Unbeknown to Cain, God knew already what he had done to Abel, because the voice of his young brother’s blood cried out to Him from the ground. God was angered by Cain’s lies and arrogance and the murder he had committed so He made Cain pay for his sins. He made him a wanderer and God caused the ground which he tilled to produce far less than it used to. After the judgement, Cain went away and settled in a place called Nod.
