      Bible Story Book For Kids - Karen Jones

      Chapter 1: Creation

      (Genesis 1)

      In the beginning, there was nothing. The universe was empty. God decided that He would create heaven and the earth, where His followers would live. God declared, Let there be light! As the light began to shine throughout the universe, this became the first day. When the light began to fade away, this became the first night.

      On the second day, when the light was shining again, God separated the sky from the emptiness of the universe. He named the sky heaven. This is where He would live, watching the earth He planned to create.

      On the third day, God created the earth. Hills, valleys, mountains, and oceans developed out of the shapeless mass. He filled the earth with grass, fruit trees, flowers, and plants of all shapes and sizes. God added water to the earth, some large oceans, some tiny streams. God named the earth land, and the waters seas.

      On the fourth day, God gave sources to the light. He created the sun to shine during the day. The moon came next. It would provide a little light at night. God also created the stars to shine during the night. The creation of the sun and moon made days and nights, seasons and years.

      On the fifth day, God created animals of all shapes and sizes. He filled the seas with fish. He made huge whales and tiny seahorses. Then He created birds to fly through the skies. Finally, God created animals to roam the lands, from the smallest mouse to the largest lion. He told them to be fruitful and multiply.

      On the sixth day, God created man and named him Adam. God formed Adam to look like Him. God used the dust of the earth to form Adam’s body. To wake Adam up, God breathed His own life into him. God then created a woman and named her Eve. God told Adam and Eve that the earth, seas, and animals were theirs to rule over. God blessed them and said,

      Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.

      New American Standard Bible Genesis 1:28

      God looked down at all He had created and thought it was good. On the seventh day, after doing all this work, God finally rested.

      Chapter 2: Adam and Eve

      (Genesis 2-3)

      As mist filled the land and seas, God breathed His life into the dust from the land. From this dust, Adam was made. Although God was giving Adam control over all of the earth, He wanted him to have a special place to live. God planted beautiful flowers and trees bearing delicious fruits. He called this land Eden. Four Rivers ran through this land. God took Adam to the Garden of Eden and told him that he got to live there. God told Adam to care for the land. Adam should plant and grow more food.

      God brought the animals He had created to Adam to help with the land.  God did not feel like this was enough. Adam needed an equal partner! God put Adam into a deep sleep and took out one of his ribs. God healed Adam immediately; he felt no pain. From this rib, God created a woman and named her Eve. God presented Eve to Adam. Eve was to be Adam’s wife. Although they wore no clothes, neither Adam nor Eve was embarrassed.

      Adam and Eve were allowed control over the Garden of Eden, they could eat whatever they wanted. God gave them just one rule. God told Adam and Eve they could not eat, or even touch the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

      A serpent lived in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. The serpent spoke to Eve, telling her that she should eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. The serpent claimed that eating the fruit would give Eve all the knowledge that God had. She would know everything, of good and evil. Eve gave in and ate the fruit. She shared it with Adam. The fruit they ate opened their eyes. They were ashamed to see they were naked! Adam and Eve tried to use the leaves from a fig tree to make clothing for themselves.

      When Adam and Eve next heard God walking through the Garden of Eden, they were afraid and hid. Seeing their embarrassment, God knew that Adam and Eve had disobeyed Him. They tried to explain, telling God that the serpent had tricked them into eating the fruit.

      God punished Adam, Eve, and the serpent for their actions. The serpent’s punishment was that it, and all of its descendants, would spend their lives crawling through the dirt. Descendants are someone’s children, their children, their children’s children and so on. Humans would be afraid of the serpent and would try to harm it.  Eve’s punishment was that having babies would be painful, and her husband would rule over her. Adam’s punishment was that he would have to grow all of his own food, instead of picking fruit from the Garden of Eden.

      Cursed are you among all animals.... upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat, all the days of your life... He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel... I will greatly increase your pangs in childbirth... yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you... In toil, you shall eat... all the days of your life... and you shall eat the plants of the field

      New American Standard Bible Genesis 3:14-18

      Finally, God created clothes for Adam and Eve to wear. They were forced to leave the Garden of Eden. God placed an angel with a fiery sword to guard the entrance to the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve, and their future children could never return.

      God was sad that he had to make Adam and Eve leave the Garden of Eden. He loved them and had created a paradise on earth for them to live in. But God had no choice. They had disobeyed Him, and hidden from Him. From this day forward, God would no longer be as close to the humans He created.

      Chapter 3: Cain and Abel

      (Genesis 4)

      After Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden, they had two sons. Cain was born first, followed by Abel. When they grew up, Cain was given the job of growing food in the fields, while Abel took care of their animals.

      Cain made an offering to God of the grain he had grown, while Abel offered God a young sheep. God liked Abel’s offering of the sheep better than the grain. God could tell that Cain was jealous of Abel, and his preferred offering. God warned Cain against the jealousy and hatred he was developing towards his younger brother.

      Cain could not contain his jealousy. One day, Cain brought Abel to the fields with him and hit Abel in the head. Cain hit Abel so hard, that Abel never got up. Cain covered him and left him in the fields. Soon, God asked Cain where his brother was. Cain made the mistake of lying to God instead of confessing. He asked, Am I my brother’s keeper?

      Because God knows everything that happens in the heavens and the earth, He knew what Cain had done. God cursed Cain. Cain would no longer be able to plant grains in the fields because the fields were poisoned with his brother’s blood. God told that Cain he would have to wander the lands for the rest of his life. He would never find a home.

      Cain told God that his punishment was too much. He could not stand it! Cain feared that he would be killed by other people because of what he had done to his brother. Because Cain was also showing regret at what he had done, God took mercy on him. Although Cain’s punishment was not taken away, God gave him a mark. This mark would protect Cain. If someone tried to harm Cain, the person would be harmed seven times as badly. Although Cain would be made to wander for a long time, he would eventually be allowed to find a home.

      Cain sadly left his home and his parents. After wandering through the lands, he finally made a new home in a land called Nod. In Nod, Cain found a wife. Cain and his wife had a child named Enoch. Cain built a city, also naming it Enoch.

      Adam and Eve had lost two sons. Abel was lost to violence, and Cain was lost to his punishment. They were also banned from the Garden of Eden. God loved them despite their mistakes and felt bad for them. God decided to bless them with another son. They named him Seth. Seth grew up to have his own son, who he named Enosh.

      From the descendants of Enoch and Enosh, mankind began to fill the world.
