II. How to Help Others (Matthew 10:611)

III. Being Helpful is a Blessing (Matthew 10:1215)

    KEY VERSE

Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. (Matthew 10:1, NRSV)

    BIBLICAL EMPHASES

    1. Jesus called twelve disciples to help Him to share the Gospel with others.

    2. Jesus taught His disciples how to follow Him.

    3. Those who are helpful to others are blessed.

    UNIFYING PRINCIPLE

When people have discovered a greater purpose in life, they may be uncertain of what to do with that discovery. Where can persons find directions for implementing that greater purpose to benefit others? Jesus gave the first disciples direction to heal and witness to the lost persons of their shared community.

    LESSON EMPHASES

•To show that Jesus calls each of us to follow Him.

•To show that we all have a special purpose for which God has called us.

•To show that we are to demonstrate God’s love by helping others.

    Target Emphases

PRESCHOOLERS: Preschoolers will learn Jesus calls us to follow Him.

YOUNGER CHILDREN: Children will learn that they are called to follow the Lord at a very young age.

OLDER CHILDREN: Older children will learn that they can commit to following Christ and sharing their faith with others.

    Suggested Teaching Plan

    GROWING WITH JESUS

MATERIALS NEEDED: music player, crayons, small toys.

GETTING STARTED: Have children’s Christian music playing as students enter the room. Greet each student as he or she enters the class. Begin with prayer.

A GREAT BEGINNING: Begin by telling the children that Jesus modeled the purpose of the church. We are to share the Gospel, heal the sick, and be kind to others. Jesus wanted others to help Him spread the Gospel. Many people were sick with all kinds of illnesses. Jesus healed them. Jesus told His disciples to also heal the sick. Jesus wants us to accept Him as our personal Savior and to share the Gospel, pray for those who are sick, and help others by being kind and thoughtful to them.

AN IMPORTANT LESSON: Read the lesson story for today. Have some small hand toys available for the students to play with for 10 minutes. Ask each student to share their toy with someone else. Ensure that everyone has a toy and has shared their toy with another student. Explain to the students that Jesus shared the Gospel with everyone and He also wants us to share with others by being kind.

KEEPING IT GOING: Remind the students that today’s lesson is about how Jesus sent His Twelve Disciples to share the Gospel with the world. Remind them that we are also called to follow Christ and demonstrate God’s love by being kind to others. Ask the students to pick someone who they will be kind to this week. Close today’s class with prayer.

JUST FOR YOU: Make a list of the names of your students and their families. Pray that your students will have a desire to serve the Lord at their young age. Pray that their families will teach them about God in their homes.

    YOUNG LEARNERS

MATERIALS NEEDED: crayons, pencils, paper, and music player.

GETTING STARTED: Make name tags with the names of the Twelve Disciples in advance. Greet each student as he or she enters the class. Begin class with prayer. Give each student a name tag. Ask each student to pretend that he or she is one of the disciples.

JUMP START: Tell the children the story of Jesus beginning the new Christian church by selecting twelve disciples to help Him spread the Gospel. Explain that in order to share the Gospel, we must first accept Jesus as our personal Savior. The disciples were personally instructed by Jesus to tell the people that the Kingdom of Heaven is near, to heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. He also instructed them to give freely to others.

THE LESSON STORY: Read today’s lesson story. Tell the students about the importance of sharing the Gospel and helping others. The purpose of sharing the Gospel is to help others accept Jesus as their personal Savior. Help the students understand that they play an important role in sharing the Gospel. We must first become followers of Christ in order to lead others to Christ. One way to share the Gospel is to share your own personal experience with Christ. Another way is to demonstrate God’s love by helping those who are in need.

TAKING IT HOME: Ask each student to think of one thing that he or she can do this week to help a friend or neighbor in need. Ask them to pray for that person every day this week. Pray with your students for those who are in need. Close the class with a song and prayer.

ENERGY TO EDUCATE: Model the compassion of Christ by helping others and praying for those who are in need. Pray that your students will accept Jesus as their personal Savior. Pray that they will experience God at this time in their lives.

    ADVENTURERS WITH JESUS

    MATERIALS NEEDED: colored paper, markers.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Cut out colored circles and write the name of each disciple on each circle. Greet each student as they enter the class Ask each student to pick a circle with a disciple’s name on it and pretend that they are one of the disciples by wearing the name tag.

’NET CHECK: Discuss and complete the activity from www.rhboyd.com. Bring extra copies to class for those who don’t have one. Allow time for ‘Net Check and Bible Quiz sections. Check and discuss the answers together.

INTRODUCTION: Ask the students to share what they know about the disciple they selected. Ask the students to reflect on what the disciples may have felt when Jesus called them to follow Him. Ask them to share with others what they would do if they were chosen to be a disciple with Jesus while He lived on earth. Explain that we are all disciples of Christ. Ask if they have personally accepted Jesus as their Savior. As disciples of Christ, we are called to share the Gospel and spread His love.

TODAY’S LESSON STORY: Ask for several students to read passages of the story. Ask them if they have any questions. Remind the students that they are called to be followers of Jesus Christ. Help them see that Jesus started the Christian church by first selecting His Disciples. He trained them to share the Gospel and spread His love. As followers of Christ, we are also to share the Gospel and spread His love.

LESSON REVIEW AND CLOSING: Ask the students to share key points about today’s lesson. Remind them to find someone who they can share the Gospel with this week. Invite the students to accept Jesus as their personal Savior. Pray with students for the lost and those who are suffering. Select a worship song and sing it. Ask a student to pray to close the class.

    — Lesson Overview —

    Introduction

When did you begin to wonder about God’s plan and purpose for your life? Just as God gave Jesus a particular purpose, He also has a purpose for you. When Jesus came into the world, He had one purpose. Jesus came to save humanity. He called Twelve Disciples to follow Him, and although they were busy being employed in work such as fishing, they accepted His call to follow Him. Jesus trained His Disciples by giving them specific instructions on where and how to spread the Gospel in order to be the most helpful to others. Jesus’ invitation to each of His Disciples was to enter into a deeper relationship with Him and a greater purpose in serving humanity. The new Christian church began with a few people who were willing to follow the way of Christ. You may be wondering how to best tell students what it means to follow Christ. The answer to that question can be summed up in one word—surrender. To surrender is to give your heart completely to God. Help your students begin to hand over their life to Christ. Teach them to let Jesus know they accept Him as their personal Savior and freely give of their time and talents to Him. Once your students discover their God-given purpose, and once God’s plan and purpose for their life is known, they will follow Christ wherever He leads.

CREATE INTEREST: Ask participants to write down what they want to be when they grow up.

    I. Called for Kingdom Purpose (Matthew 10:1–5)

Matthew 10 is not a call narrative. It is a list of the twelve men Jesus called. The Gospel according to Matthew provides us with two call stories for five of the twelve disciples. In Matthew 4:18-22, we read about the call of two separate sets of siblings: Simon and Andrew, and James and John. These two sets of brothers were only four of the twelve men Jesus called to follow Him. The second instance of a call story happens five chapters later in Matthew 9:9-13. It tells of only one person. In Matthew 9:9 we read about a man named Matthew sitting at a tax booth. Jesus walked by the tax booth and told Matthew Follow me. Five of the twelve disciples have call stories recounted in the Gospel according to Matthew, yet, Matthew 10:1-5 presents us with a list of twelve persons. This is because God had a plan and purpose for all twelve men. The Twelve became the disciples of Jesus and Eleven of these would later be called the Apostles of Jesus Christ.

The most well known of the Twelve is the first person listed: Simon, also known as Peter. One of the reasons Simon is the most well known is because we know him by his nickname: Peter,
