The knock on the door made Katherine look up from her needlework to the sight of the butler stepping into the conservatory.

he said. But a letter was delivered. I thought it might be of some importance, so took the liberty of bringing it to you straight away.
She said nothing as she put down what she was holding on the table next to her chair. It freed up her hands to take the letter when it was held out to her.

Katherine watched him leave before turning her attention to the letter and a smile flashed across her face when she recognized the handwriting.
