More than focusing on curing codependency, the book mostly goes into depth defining, describing, causes and recognizing codependency. Suggestions on how to get over it are scattered and all over the place. The book in parts is a little all over the place as well. .

Although I learned a few new things, I felt like this book was so over generalized when it comes to actually recovering from this huge problem. It almost seemed like an extended cliche article on codependency and how reducing screentime, eating better and exercising will reduce your stress and in turn will ease some of the codependency symptoms.

Introduction

This book discusses the topic of codependency, the different role it plays, and how you can free yourself from it. We’ll begin by explaining what codependency is, the various forms in which it can manifest itself, how this concept developed in the world of psychiatry, and the different levels in which someone can be codependent.

Next, we’ll go through and explain the different types of dysfunction you may find in yourself and those around you, behaviors that may seem like codependency but are just normal emotions, and habits that may be confused with codependency. We will then go through some of the steps you can take to identify whether you or someone you know is displaying codependent behaviors.

Once we've covered exactly what codependency is and how to identify it, we’ll go into steps you can take to remove yourself from codependent situations, including a guide to self-care, making boundaries, reversing people-pleasing behaviors, and detaching yourself from codependent relationships.

Like most psychiatric concepts, codependency is very complex in its causes, symptoms, and effects. In almost all cases, the road to codependency begins in childhood. Of course, all children are entirely dependent on others in the first few years of their lives, and many remain very reliant on their families well into young adulthood. But a person who is codependent to the extent that it becomes harmful both to themselves and their family has certain aspects of their life that rely too much on external factors, such as dynamics, substances, rituals, or other people.

We all grow up learning how to depend on others for survival during childhood. These behaviors are natural and, in most cases, do not become detrimental to us in the long run. However, in codependent people, we find that the gradual growth, separation, and independence that occurs in the development of healthy individuals either takes place partially or not at all.

Before we begin, it's important to clarify that no one decides to become codependent. While it may have caused turmoil, heartache, and struggle in your life, remember that the codependent person is never at fault, nor are the people who find themselves in a relationship with them. Codependency is the product of an unhealthy environment.

If you find yourself or someone close to you struggling with codependency, this book will help you.

What is Codependency?

For someone new to codependency, it can be a little hard to wrap your head around, as it can spread throughout many areas of life. When trying to grasp the concept, it can be helpful to know the basic idea behind codependency and the different ways people use it, such as in relationships and substance abuse. In this chapter, we’ll cover the basic definition of codependency, its history, and its severity in different individuals.

Defining Codependency

The first thing we should establish is that codependency is not a diagnosable disease. Rather, it is a pattern of behavior that usually spans many aspects of an individual’s life. In short, a codependent person is someone who either cannot function on their own or has a weak sense of personal identity which causes them to base their self-worth, actions, needs, and desires on something else.
