      The Tube System

      First tube was in 2144 - from Hong Kong to Beijing. Many trial & error runs, corrections and modifications, finally perfected in 2146. Three designs: Underground, Surface-to-Surface, and High Arch for long distance travel between major cities:

      Chapter 3

      Arrival to Moscow, 16June2285

      Madahn inserted his KR card then stepped quickly into the tube capsule. Once settled in, he hit the 38753 buttons and relaxed for the twenty-eight minute trip to Moscow where he was to meet his new contact, Vereena Morris. Since this was her first trip away from the North American continent, he would also act as her chaperone.

      Vereena was new to the Syndicate of Nations and her training as an Advanced Personality Reader had prepared her well for screening-out the faked words and gestures skillfully employed by the upper echelon delegates at these high level get-togethers.

      Tomorrow’s conflab will feature Boriss Chernikov, the new leader, scheduled to propose land feature improvements for several members of the SON The meeting promises to be very interesting. Madahn is anticipating showmanship and deception, both to be served in large portions.

      Arriving at the Central Moscow Tubeport, he chose to walk the three blocks to his hotel, primarily to get the stiffness out of his 148 year-old body after the sudden tube deceleration. He also wanted to look and act spry.  Word had it that Vereena was only 124 and had no problem dating older men.

      D’Hote Nouveau rose in the distance, an imposing structure featuring grotesque, oversized multi-colored turrets evoking memories of  a 19th century Red Square. He imagined the chief designer to have been a well-connected DublVod junkie. In his room, he activated his MultiCom and found there was a message from Vereena welcoming him to Moscow and suggesting drinks in the lobby bar around 17:30.

      Sounds good to me, he messaged, then a quick rest on the airfloat.

      Madahn’s assignment was two-fold, 1) Make Vereena safe and relaxed for this important task and 2) To assure his superiors that there would be no quickstep maneuvers by the Syndicate to attempt a takeover of even more territory and mineral rights than they already had. The repeated buzzing on his left wrist woke him at 16:50 as programmed and he headed for a quick, cold shower, air dry and hair styling.

      At 17:30 sharp, the verticar opened and he stepped briskly into the hotel lobby. Vereena was easy to spot in the crowd and he headed her way, trying to look composed. She held out her hand.

      Greetings, citizen.

      He accepted the handshake, warm and soft. They chatted, strolling slowly to the lounge, and sat as far from the Tricaster sound center as possible. Then small talk, drinks, charcuterie until 21:00. They agreed to meet tomorrow morning at 09:00, for breakfast two hours before the conference for final preparation and review.

      Chapter 4

      Breakfast Discussion

      Over his breakfast of fried mushrooms with sausage, eggs and coffee, Madahn laid out his expectations of how the program would go and pointed out the anomalies he expected to come up in Boriss Chernikov’s presentation. He had been subjected to the leader’s charm and intellect in the past, and he knew exactly what to tell her. Vereena took mental notes and asked Madahn for his personal take on Chernikov, especially his facial appearance and posture. She was an expert in ‘Target Reading’ and was seldom off the mark when reporting her evaluations of triggers, tweaks, shifts, glances and other unspoken language. She was very aware that poise and pleasantness were acquired assets and that charm and balanced motion were products of numerous interpersonal confrontations, many practiced modifications, and a lifetime of improvements.

      Madahn explained that Boriss was no ordinary performer and that he was totally conscious of his environment and all who were in it. He always carried-out his chosen duties for a purpose, and with the utmost precision. Vereena volunteered that she understood and would take these cautions into account when evaluating Boriss. She also commented that she had, so far, avoided being intimidated by any of her subjects and hopefully that would include this one.

      I’m sure you’ll do just fine, Madahn said. I just wanted to give you a heads up. This gentleman is as slippery as they get.

      Chapter 5

      Syndicate Meeting Day #1, 17June2285

      They chose the hotel shuttle over aircab and arrived at Moscow’s International Center early, in time to find their pods in the huge, circular arena featuring what appeared to be a crystal clear podium floating in the very center. The attendee accommodations were unique in several ways, mostly to provide a comfortable, productive environment and also, thanks to 21st Century inventiveness, the hologram imagery created an illusion that the speaker was always facing you, speaking to you alone.

      At 11:00 the lights dimmed, a chime sounded then, as if by magic, the Chairman General of the Syndicate of Nations appeared on the podium appearing as though suspended in a vacuum.

      We welcome all of our guests to the beauty and grandeur of Mother Moscow and the International Center, the host said. Today it is my honor to present the leader of the Russian Reform Revolution party who will share with us his views on the current status of international boundaries, land features and what might be accomplished to further our shared goals of peace and prosperity for all.

      Suddenly, more magic and Chernikov appeared in the hologram, a vision of youth and energy, due to several medical and scientific disciplines. He sported a glistening black, coarse head of hair with white chevrons on the temples producing an image of maturity and experience.
