CJ Dodaro

CJ DodaroI am a semi-retired, 68 year young man, who has worked very hard my whole life. Although I have occasionally worked for other companies, I have been an entrepreneur since I was a young boy.I starting out selling things door to door when I was around 10 years old; seeds, greeting cards, and wrapping paper for all occasions. After a couple of years, I graduated to lemonade/kool-aid stands, washing cars and cutting neighbor's lawns. I did just about anything to make a few bucks. When I graduated from high school, I did not really know what I wanted to do for a career, so I went to auto mechanics school to learn a trade. I figured that even if it was not what I eventually wanted for a life-long career, it would be a skill that would always come in handy. After graduating from the trade school, I worked in the auto repair industry for only a couple of years. While I enjoyed the work, I quickly got tired of smelling like grease and oil every day, yet I continued working on cars as a hobby.Variety being the spice of life, I have owned and operated many successful businesses during my lifetime, many of which I started from scratch; a full service landscape company, soup and sandwich restaurant, and a gas station and body shop. I also had a three-piece 50s & 60s rock & roll band which was a lot of fun for many years.I have also owned and operated several online businesses; a couple of e-commerce stores, and currently operate a website: ImprovingAmericaLLC.com, where I instruct you how to start and operate a business of your choice. My hobbies are: stamp collecting, playing guitar, and home repairs.I also have plans to start a Charity, possibly an MLM website, as well as write some additional eBooks. If any of these interest you, drop me an email, and I will keep you apprised of their creation: cjdodaro@att.net

    Chapter 1: Getting Started

There are (3) major areas of concern when creating and completing an eBook or a Paperback:

    1. Writing

    2. Formatting

    3. Publishing

Let’s take a look at each of these areas and become more familiar with them:

    Writing a Book

Writing a book, whether it will be an eBook, a Paperback, or both, can seem like a daunting task at first. However, it is really not that difficult, but will take a fair amount of time if it is going to be a good one.

Most of us have written book reports when we were in school. Writing a book is simply, doing something similar to that, but on a somewhat grander scale.

The first thing that you will need to decide on is your topic. This will determine whether your book will be Non-Fiction or Fiction and the particular genre (category) that you intend to be in. Next, you need to decide on your audience. Will your book be for adults, teens, or children?

If you are writing a Non-Fiction book, you should choose a topic that you know a lot about, or are at least passionate about. When you write a book about something that you are passionate about, but do not have a lot of first-hand experience, then, you will need to do a lot of research, just as you did for your book reports. If you write about something that you are already very familiar with and knowledgeable about, it will be much easier.

If you are writing a Fiction book, you will need to be much more creative, deciding on a topic as well as a basic story line. You will need to keep track of all of the characters in your book, making sure that they intertwine in your story where appropriate. You will also need to create a specific demeanor for each one, which will allow their idiosyncrasies to keep your readers’ attention, placing them into the scenes in your story as if they are actually there viewing it first-hand.

Each person has their own interests and talents. Some people may be good at writing poetry, others may be great story tellers, while still others may be more of a reporter or a problem solver, reporting or explaining how best to accomplish something or how to solve a particular problem.

You will need to take a self-assessment and decide what really moves you and what your particular strong points are. If your desire is to write science fiction, then come up with an interesting story that others will like to read. If it’s explaining how to cook some of the best tasting meals ever, then write a cook book. You will need to decide on your path, based on your own individual passions.

    Formatting

Your manuscript will need to be reformatted in a certain way, in order to allow your eBook to appear properly on a variety of different e-readers. This will be a bit time-consuming for your first eBook, but once you learn what is required of you, reformatting future eBooks will be a breeze. Most Self-Publishing sites have very good instructions for you to complete this task, along with checks of your submission in order to make sure that you are in total compliance. One excellent site is: Smashwords.com

Some of you, who have never written a book before, might think that it would be prudent to check out the proper formatting instructions before writing your first book in order to speed up the process. While you can certainly peruse the formatting instructions, I would not recommend that you attempt to incorporate all of them as you write. You will be constantly distracted from writing your book, attempting to pay close attention to the formatting. This will probably impede your writing dramatically, causing confusion in your thought process. For best results, simply write fluently, using the tools that you have already learned, and then, when your manuscript has been completed to your satisfaction (including: Proof Reading and Spell Check), then you can reformat your manuscript for compliance.

    Publishing Your Book

Long gone are the days when Publishing your book would require you to hire a professional Proof Reader, before you can submit your manuscript to a Publisher; perhaps dozens of Publishers, one at a time, and wait for each to send you a letter of acceptance, or in most cases, rejection, only to find out that the one that finally accepts you, requires you to rewrite a portion of your book. Then, you would find out that the Publisher is going to make a lot more on your book than you will. Really?

These days it is a much easier process in order to simply Self-Publish an eBook or Paperback. You will still need to proof read your manuscript, but most Word Processing programs have a decent Spell Checker that will do most of this for you. You can decide on each item that is brought to your attention, whether you wish to change what you originally wrote (based on the suggestions provided) or keep it as is.

As far as Publishers go, there is a variety of sites on the internet that will Publish your eBook or Paperback for FREE, distribute it through a variety of channels, and pay you a decent commission on your sales. You get to decide on the price that you want your book to sell for, along with the distribution choices and commissions.

    The Sites That I Use

I personally use (2) sites for Publishing my eBooks and (1) for turning those eBooks into Paperbacks. They are: Smashwords and Amazon’s KDP (Kindle Books).

The reason that I use those (2) Publishers is:

    1. They both offer wide distribution for books.

    2. They both offer reasonable commissions.

    3. I Publish my eBook on Smashwords first, using their reformatting process. When I include that eBook for sale on Amazon’s KDP, I am able to use the same formatting process, so no additional reformatting is needed, except for changing any Smashwords links to Amazon links.

    4. Once my eBook has been Published on KDP, it is a fairly simple process in order to also turn it into a Paperback, with no upfront costs for doing so.

    5. Both sites offer a FREE ISBN for each book Published (which can only be used on their site). However, you can also use your own ISBN that you can purchase.

You are certainly welcome to use the Publishers of your choosing, but I would highly recommend that you check out the ones that I use and compare everything before making your choice. Simply click on the links.

For your information, all of the instructions in this eBook, for reformatting and Publishing your eBook and/or Paperback are based on the sites that I use. If you are using another site for any of the process, you may need to make certain changes to the instructions.
