About this ebook

To Heaven and Back Again, In Shakespearean Verse!

(Also available in the author’s audiobook narration)

A poetic voice for our age, A. LeRoy recalls the majestic visions of Dante and Homer as he takes the former president on a shamanic journey through time and space, even to the throne of God!

What lessons must the politician learn before he hands over the keys of empire to Donald Trump? He has an angel to guide him, a philosopher to counsel him, and the lessons of history to instruct him. But will he heed Heaven's message?

This story may remind you of Scrooge's revelation in A Christmas Carol, Homer's scenes of warring gods, and Dante's ascent with Beatrice.

A divine revelation awaits you!

"Captivated me from start to end… Deeply stirring, intelligent and amusing in turn… Takes the reader on a fantastic journey across time and space… Cleverly done!… A must-read for those into politics and literature… A true classic. "
Reader Reviews

"Absolutely wonderful and hypnotic narration, his voice flowing over gently with the narrative song of his words."

    Obama’s Dream

A Divine Revelation in the Style of Shakespeare

    Preface

It may serve readers if I explain why the author of this poem shares his first name with one of its leading characters. I first came to know the angel Abdiel through Paradise Lost, the great epic poem by John Milton. He first appears in Book V of that work, when he is the only angel among the multitude at Satan's command to defy the call to rebel against God. He leaves the apostate ranks and joins the loyal warriors.

Later, when the two great armies of angels face off, it is Abdiel who delivers the first blow, striking Satan with such force that ten paces huge/ [Satan] back recoiled. So inspiring is Abdiel's example that I not only changed my first name to his in 2013, but went on to give him recurring roles both in this work and in my larger epic poem, Elijah.

    A Poet's Apology

    — on recording his audiobook —

With my recital of this epic book,

I pray your kindnesses shall overlook

    Shortcomings and rendition imperfect.

Of course, God speaks the British dialect

As everybody knows, the angels too!

It even works for Satan, and who knew

Plato speaks the Queen's English, though a Greek?

But with the American characters, do not seek

    Authentic imitation of each note,

I but the spirit of their speech denote.

Even the title character forgive —

Suspend your disbelief, the role shall live.

With all that said, I hope hereby to bring

A wondrous journey on imagined wing. ¹

    Wings of Desire

One night, as Washington D.C. is sleeping, two great angels sweep into the White House on a divine mission to President Obama. They arrive in the Master Bedroom, only to find the devil whispering into the ear of the sleeping president. A confrontation ensues, ending up with Satan's eviction. The senior angel, Abdiel, then orders a ring of angelic protection around the White House to prevent further intrusions, and charms the First Lady into peaceful sleep.

The lights of Washington spread out below,

Two messengers of God sweep through the skies,

Alighting on the White House to bestow

Divine wisdom to counter darkest lies.

Past suited guards on vigilant patrol,

Past checkpoints, gates, and barriers unperceived,

    The spirits' movements evading control

Of man's detection so oft self-deceived.

Into the Master Bedroom the pair leap

In silent passage through the lither ¹ walls,

But are surprised to see where loathsome creeps

A ghoulish figure whose presence appalls.

Close by Obama's ear, there sits the fiend,

Whispering foul thoughts of evil influence. ²

To overhear and learn what might be gleaned

Of wicked schemes one angel's preference.

His colleague, though, the more impetuous,

Unsheathes his sword, presses its tip into

The devil's neck who freezes motionless,

Feeling the wrath of Heaven coursing through.

None but an angel could have found him there.

He senses in that steel Divinity.

A dauntless sword that would his prowess dare

Must have been forged in Heaven's armoury.
