      Moonshine and Thistle

      Snow drifted down, a gentle implacable dusting that slowly crushed everything underneath its growing mass. The pine trees along the lane creaked with the weight of the snow, branches dragging downwards in depressed arcs rather than reaching upwards in their normal festive swags. There were wells of darkness underneath the pines, places where the bent branches had created pockets of dry in the midst of the snow but the cold lurked there, too.

      As if they could get into any of those wells, anyway. Too much snow in the way.

      Lacy grunted as she hefted another shovel full of snow. Her shoulders burned with the effort of it all. Some retreat this had turned out to be. Jamie'd been so excited about this trip, too, babbling for weeks about rural chalets, wonderful scenery, away from everything.

      Yeah, they were away from everything all right. They were a good hundred miles from the nearest grocery store of any size, thirty miles from the nearest gas station and they were snowed in. Feet of snow piled over the little lane that led from their 'chalet' to the so-called main road that led to the nearest tiny town.
