About this ebook

Nine Lives: My time as the MI6's top spy inside al-Qaeda by Aimen Dean: Conversation Starters

He is first drawn into religious studies group as a teenager in Saudi Arabia. He soon becomes a member of al-Qaeda and is interviewed by the leader himself, Osama bin Laden himself. In Darunta, he joins the efforts to manufacture of biological and chemical weapons. He meets other top-ranking Islamic militants including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the planner behind the 9/11 attacks, and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who later founds the Iraqi version of the al-Qaeda. Dean goes to Chechnya, the Philippines, Europe, Afghanistan, and the Gulf, where he reveals details of his frontline battles in all these places. But he increasingly feels alienated by the group's lack of remorse and bloodthirsty ways as civilian deaths are incurred. In 1999, he went to Qatar in the pretext of a medical concern. The Qatar government brought him in for questioning and he took the chance to change sides. Aimen Dean started spying for the MI6.

Nine Lives is cited by The Wall Street Journal as "a major contribution to the literature of espionage, and a rare book to say something original about contemporary jihadism."

INE LIVES: MY TIME AS M16’S TOP SPY INSIDE AL QAEDA  IS A BOOK written by Aimen Dean. It tells his story of how he spied for the British intelligence agency against the al-Qaeda until his cover was revealed by the Americans. Dean is the pseudonym of one of the founders of al-Qaeda who became disillusioned with the terrorist group and turned into an agent for the MI6, the United Kingdom's intelligence agency. He is first drawn into the group when, as a teenager, he starts attending religious studies in Saudi Arabia. He becomes a committed member and goes to Bosnia in 1994 to fight with Muslims and Croats. He witnesses atrocities which make a deep impact on him. Despite the shock of being involved in battles and atrocities, he reinforces his commitment to fight with Muslims and defend their cause. He believes that he is defending the global community of Muslims against its western enemies. He is assigned to Afghanistan where, in Darunta, he joins the efforts to manufacture of biological and chemical weapons. He soon becomes a member of al-Qaeda and is interviewed by the leader himself, Osama bin Laden himself. Aside from Bin Laden, he meets other top-ranking Islamic militants including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the planner behind the 9/11 attacks, and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who later on founds the Iraqi version of the al-Qaeda.
