    Chapter One: Moving Up

Mariah flattened her palm out on the deep blue jacket and ran it down to the hem, looking carefully at every detail in the mirror. She needed to be sure to pick the best suit for the upcoming meeting despite not really wanting to be a part of it. The firm she worked for was set on closing a major account with one of the most highly pursued companies in the business and she was part of the team in charge of the negotiations and contracts.

She should have been ecstatic about it given that it would provide a major boost to her already soaring career, but she was not much enthused with how they ran their operations. She had a strong feeling there would be problems for the firm in the long run. She had voiced her concerns to her superiors only for them to be dismissed on the grounds it was too big an account to pass up.

Despite what her superiors said, Mariah knew it would be much more than just a few inconveniences down the road. The firm could end up taking on more than it was prepared to handle. Regardless of its success thus far, the firm was considered a new star and did not have the connections or knowledge of the much older and established firms in the field. She had watched the firm grow with admiration and when it came time to find a job, she was beyond flattered at being considered for West Leeann PR.

She was passionate about her job and, having been offered a ranked position due to her education and internship experience, she knew her position was usually only offered to those who’d already been working for years. West Leeann PR saw her potential and knew newbies could be star players. She was part of the team and the major deal would more than likely close successfully in just a couple days.

They’re arrogant, plain and simple. That was the response she’d given her best friend, Lisa, when asked why she was so sure there would be problems with the big company. "I just know they are going to place me in the team that works with them," she complained to Lisa. There was nothing Lisa could do or say to help Mariah feel better.

Lisa sighed and said, I’m sorry you have to deal with this but hopefully it will all work out. There will undoubtedly be hard times but I’m sure you will be able to handle them as they come. Mariah smiled. Her best friend always had such great faith in her and thought the most of her capabilities. If it had not been for Lisa, Mariah was not sure how she would have made it through graduate school.

We want you to take lead on the main team for the majority of their internal PR needs, John Somers, Mariah’s immediate supervisor, told her at the conclusion of the meeting the following day. The deal was all but formally closed now and West Leeann PR had acquired one of the most sought out accounts with a major company in the United States. She had to act at least mildly happy and relieved along with her colleagues when none other than the CEO himself announced it. Now that she was being given such a major responsibility, she had to be especially grateful. At 27 years old, she was much younger than many of her counterparts with similar responsibilities. She was certainly grateful her employers had such strong faith in her, she only wished it had come with a different assignment.

As she walked back to her office to review the files John had given her she realized it might not be entirely a bad thing to be assigned lead on this team. If she took point on these affairs, she might have the chance to spot a problem before it got too big to handle. She could possibly even subtly steer things in a better direction.

She would feel better being on the inside anyway rather than being informed of an issue when it was far too late to be handled cleanly or at all. She pulled her phone out from her desk drawer and sent Lisa a message informing her of what had just happened. Less than a minute later, her office phone rang. It was Lisa. I told you it would happen but I was shocked to be made lead, to be honest. It’s a big deal especially with this account.

We need to celebrate! Lisa sounded as excited as Mariah should have felt. "I know this isn’t a project you wanted but it’s a really big deal!"

You’re right, Mariah responded with a slightly broken voice. It was unbelievable how quickly the firm had given her such an enormous task. So she agreed to celebrate and Lisa whipped up a party in no time. Within the hour, friends of theirs filled the place and the alcohol was flowing freely despite it not being the weekend. Some friends even brought along people Mariah barely knew or had never even met but she did not mind. It was all for a good time and everyone was in a good mood, all happy to celebrate her success.

Lisa grabbed Mariah’s hand and tugged her as she bee lined to the front door where their friend, Carlos, was walking in with their favorite tequila. She instantly knew what was coming. Lisa poured out three shots and handed one to Mariah exclaiming, To your success!

Mariah laughed and cheered with her, both of them downing the shot and then laughing again. She never imagined having advanced so far in her career while still being under thirty. She had wanted this for as long as she could remember and dedicated her life to it. Every step she took since a young age was carefully measured and planned to finally lead up to this moment. She was not one to boast but she was definitely one to be proud of her achievements. She worked too hard and was far too dedicated not to be.

But tonight was all about celebrating and just enjoying life. So she turned up the music and danced with Lisa. They had more drinks until the crowd of their friends and acquaintances began to blur a bit and the floor beneath her feet felt a little shaky. She wasn’t too drunk; after all, she did still have to go to work the next morning. But she was definitely having a great time.

As they walked to the kitchen to whip up another cocktail, Mariah noticed two young men standing against the wall watching them with sly grins. The taller of the two looped around Mariah and leaned back against the counter of the kitchen where all the liquor bottles were. Can I fix you a drink? She looked him up and down, sizing him up, before shrugging and nodding. He was tall, lean and in shape, with a nice tan and dazzling green eyes. Mark, he said as he extended his hand out.

She reached out and daintily took his hand. Mariah. She smiled flirtatiously, not really bothering in holding back even in the slightest like she usually did. His grin grew wider as he withdrew his hand and turned to look at the bottles of liquor and mixers lining the counter. Quite a spread you have going, he said, eyes roaming over everything as he clearly tried to decide what to make for her. She shrugged and watched him. Surely, he was going to try making something fancy to impress her.

Let’s go with a classic, he said as he picked out what he needed and whipped it up quickly, pouring it over some ice. The secret is in the ratio, he said as he handed the cup to her. She took a sip and was successfully impressed. He hadn’t needed to make something complicated for it to taste great. This is one of the best cocktails I’ve ever tasted, she told him honestly.

He threw his hands up and shrugged. Told you, it’s all in the way you mix it. He turned around and fixed himself a drink before turning back to her. She motioned toward the balcony with her head and, after he nodded, the two headed off in that direction. She almost missed the smug look on Lisa’s face but turned around just in time to catch it, so she glared at her playfully. It had been a while since she actually flirted with a man. In fact, it had been a while since she’d even looked at a man. She’d been so consumed by her job she’d forgotten what it was like to meet new people.

So, is this your place? he asked as he leaned forward against the railing and appreciated the view. Mariah nodded, taking another sip of her drink. As she reached out to grab onto the railing for balance she realized maybe it was a good time to slow down with the drinking. After all, she did not want to be a drunken mess in front of this man. As he started making conversation, it was all drowned out by ambient noise and her own thoughts. She found her attention drifting away as she focused instead on things like the shape and movement of his lips, the cheering people inside, and how she would need to be up early the following day.

Not wanting to think of most anything, she decided to focus on Mark but not on what he was saying. His voice somehow was still drowned out and she was focusing only on his tan skin and the way his green eyes gleamed under the moonlight. She took another sip of her drink and was just about to blurt out You’re really attractive when Lisa came stumbling through the balcony door.

Mariah! Mariah! You have to come with me, she practically screamed. Her face was split into a wide grin and she looked at Mark somewhat apologetically before grabbing Mariah’s arm and yanking her inside. Lisa dragged her into her bedroom and shut the door, making sure to lock it.

    Lisa, what is going on?

You can’t go for it with that guy! Lisa said loud enough even she slapped her hand over her mouth afterward. She looked
