    Alice Sebold was born in Madison, Wisconsin, but grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. In 1981, she moved to New York to attend Syracuse University. During her freshman year, she was raped while walking home through a park. She reported it to the police, who initially could not identify any suspects. Five months later, she recognised her rapist and notified the police. Her rapist was convicted of rape and sodomy and sentenced to eight to 25 years in prison. He has since been released, but Sebold has stated that she does not know where he is now. After university, she moved to Manhattan and then South Carolina. She held several waitressing jobs whilst attempting to begin her writing career. Her first work, Lucky, a memoir centred on her experience of rape, began as a 10-page assignment for university. Then, aged 33, she began writing The Lovely Bones, which
