    A Note from the Author

You might be wondering why I’ve chosen to write a book about Lent. Lent is one of my favorite times of the year. It is the 40 days leading up to a special holiday some of us call Easter. These 40 days do not include Easter Sunday. During this time, we often deny ourselves things like meat, sweets, technology, and other indulgences to signify love and admiration for Jesus who gave up His life to cleanse our sins. The historical purpose of Lent was to provide emotional and spiritual cleansing through atonement, reflection, self-denial, and prayer. By fasting and praying, we can intentionally remove things from our lives that keep us from God. This stillness and reflection creates the desire to put God first in our hearts, minds, and spirits. Some Christians believe that by denying the flesh, they honor Jesus. As I did the research for this book and talked to many people in various stages of their walks with God, I found that everyone has different perceptions and reasons for fasting and celebrating the Lent season, none of them being wrong. Some of us desire to increase the intensity and intentionality of prayer, some desire spiritual growth, some wish to be more submissive, and some are surrendering, ready for a breakthrough in their lives.
