About this ebook

The big eaters were removed by Little Bird. Before this, time was only, ‘you feed, or you are the feed.’ The two valleys continue to grow with no threats other than the white cold which comes when it comes. Little Bird starts a marking wall to account for important events. It starts to account for only the most basic of ideas. The concept of time and dates is not understood in these early days until the big eaters were removed.
Centuries pass by and a young female with no name is about to be given a name. She wonders about all things and finds that Little Bird’s marking wall has been replaced with a new one. Only the old ones know of the old wall and its ancient beginnings. Young Bird with her new name creates a system that starts using the time marks on the new wall. She sees that the valleys are incredibly old.
The mountain they live on is slowing down and may soon not produce items needed to live. It is not clear to Young Bird who her ancient mother may be.
Young Bird sails upon the wetness even though the Council forbade it. After many lights of travel, she discoveries a family unknown to anyone in her two valleys.
The family is only 100 members. The land and wetness will support no more. Young Bird diverts some wetness back into its former course for the family. The family works the land rather than chasing the herd as they have done for eons of time. Young Bird returns to her valleys with new knowledge.
Will these two groups be able to survive, even together, as the mountain changes and the cold white stays longer every cycle.

    Prologue

This ancient land in the far past had only a vague idea of what time was, ‘you feed, or you are the feed.’ Everything changed when Little Bird eliminated the large eaters and discovered a new valley. Before Little Bird’s time, you were to feed, or you were the feed and nothing else mattered. There was no such thing as a ‘date’ or ‘time.’ Time was measured in feeding, either you or the larger eaters. After Little Bird’s action, time began to have meaning.

Many, many white seasons have passed since Little Bird walked the valleys. She is now only a wisp of a memory and forgotten except to become a full member of the encampment you must recite at the ‘wall,’ the great deeds of Little Bird. The words mean little even to the old ones that oversee the ceremony. No one has any idea what a large eater is or what they do. Some people use them to scare their children into doing what they want.

    Chapter 1 Time Starts

Now there is a starting date in this world. The people in the new and old valleys mark the time from when Little Bird rid both the valleys of the large eaters. They now measure every light from the time Little Bird began to scratch a single line on the wall in a cliff near the old valley. She also began to tie a knot in a vine for each light which is kept in the new valley.

Her system not only marks the lights but the starting of the white cold and other major events. Many secondary scratches are kept by the old ones.

They all count in terms of 20, one for each of their fingers and toes. Everyone is expected to be able to read the scratching wall before they can become a full member of the encampment. Such a test would go as follows.

How many white colds ago did Little Bird start the scratching wall?

Where are you on the scratching wall?

Where is your Mother on the wall?

    Where is your grandmother
