    Chapter 1

    Pride

Staring blankly at the bright computer screen in front of him, he doesn't blink as his eyes scan through the endless list of numbers. All that can be heard is an out of sync clicking of his mouse every now and then. The silence is suddenly broken as a pile of files is dropped down onto the office floor behind him. The sudden crash of files doesn't distract Jack for one second, he expected it. He is used to it.

Everything in Jack's life is calculated, planned as such. Well that is what he believes and tells people. From the time his alarm clock goes off in the morning, he operates in a specific order, follows the same routine. He snoozes his alarm clock once, only once. When his second alarm goes off, he will sit up and stretch. Straight to the toilet, where-after the basin is approached for a hand and face wash followed by teeth. Then a shower. He will return to the room, in passing calling once for his daughter to rise from her slumber as he makes his way towards his cupboard, pants will be the first to be put on , left foot first. Then socks, left foot first. Never ever the right.

He believes this order and strict sequence eliminates any chance of being late and lessons the odds of encountering mistakes in everything he does. Jolene on the other hand is completely different. They have been married for 13 years and there different take on life has led many of their friends and family to believe the old cliché that 'opposite attracts'. Jolene is usually the reason they are late.

Working full time and having a child thrown into the mix is not easy. Evenings in particular is extremely busy and difficult as tempers flare very often as all that needs to be completely places stress on everyone in the household. Supper, dishes, washing and cleaning takes up most of the time as bed time edges ever closer. Mornings being more sorted as most is prepared at night.

Jack sits in his office, pinned to his work and the recently dropped files on the office floor behind him awaits his attention. He will not touch those files until he has made his second cup of coffee for the morning. With a fast paced walk he darts out of his office and towards the kitchen, where he is joined by his two best work mates, Brian and Damon.

This trio of men are better known by the rest of the employees as the infamous 'Rainbow Squad'. Reason being that Jack is white, Brian is Black and Damon is Indian. They are in a sense a true demographical reflection of South Africa. The nick name has never bothered them much as the don't really mix with any of the other employees. Coffee is made, and morning snacks are shared as the men received their task for the day, Damon happens to be the Team Leader in their Department, so being friends with the man in charge more often than not has it's benefits. One of these benefits are being able to sneak in an extra fifteen to twenty minutes at lunch time.

The three men often relax in the coffee shop on the ground floor of the building across the road from the building that they work in. Here many a joke and other serious personal matters are often discussed.

The particular topic of today is one more serious than usual. Damon sits back as he sips his soft drink and makes a comment that brings a unfamiliar silence to the table,

Thirty years ago we wouldn't really have been allowed to be friends and have lunch like this.

The words ring in there minds as they have a look around. All three of them being in their late thirties where in their mid teens when apartheid ended. Not one of them really understood what was happening back then.

It's cool though, it all worked out okay! Brian says with a smile as he continuous

At least we get some samoosas from time to time now from you. Damon smiles as he shrugs off the joke with a shake of his head.

South Africans are all generally proud of how things panned out since the middle nineties.

To think the country was on the brink of civil war, now almost thirty years later we can sit at a mixed race table of people and all is good Jack says while taking another bite of his burger.

The seriousness is quickly forgotten as beautiful girls walks past slowly, all three men’s heads are magnetically attracted to her as they turn their heads in perfect harmony, following her as she walks by.

After the girl disappeared out of site they focus back on their food as Brian breaks the silence,

Did you guys hear about the racial fight caught on someone cell phone at a garage? He asks as he takes a bite.

Social media is in a buzz about it he says with a mouth full of burger.

    Damon laughs as he replies,

Ya, I heard. A right wing and a left wing person. Obviously it won't end well, but to be honest, the only left wing and right wing I’m interested in is on this chicken

He snaps the wing off of his lunch and takes a bite, as the table erupts in laughter. The political drama in the country has never interfered with their friendship, in fact the differences and problems of a new democratic country has only strengthened their friendship. Cultural differences created many a topic of discussion and creates inquisitiveness.

Political aspects of any country seems to involve power and pride and the misuse of public funds, it's the same old story over and over. I really am so sick of switching on the news and listening to political parties making promises that we all should know will never be delivered Brian says as he wipes his mouth and sits back in his chair as he throws the serviette into the empty lunch packaging.

You sound like a White person Damon jokes as he throws a piece of chip at Brian.

The three finish up their lunches and discards of the dirty serviettes and empty containers into a bin on the left of the escalators just outside the Coffee shop's seating area. They walk briskly towards the middle escalators as Jack suddenly freezes, he just remembered that he had to work late tonight as he is off tomorrow to renew his driving licence, but there wont be enough time to catch up on his work before the weekend and month-end falls on a Sunday so he has to complete his paper work this week.

I need to grab something extra to keep to eat later , remember I’m off tomorrow but putting in a few hours extra tonight.

Jack runs back and grabs a pre packed sandwich a chocolate and two packets of chips before heading to the till to pay. He walks out with the stash as his mates wait impatiently throwing comments and remarks as he makes his way toward them. They walk out the building and stop at the robot by the pedestrian crossing patiently waiting for the light to change.

Damon highlight’s the fact that he is the boss and reminds Jack that by no means will he be paid over time for extra work done out of free will

and it's not like your work is done correctly any ways , you always make mistakes that I have to fix!

Brian and Damon laugh and nudge jokingly at Jack as he offers a sarcastic smile and looks back up at the robot which still had not jumped to the green light. He looks down and to his right as a loud bang echo’s from down the road. It a truck unloading huge piles of tied together flat cardboard sheets.

    Thud !

Another stack is dropped on the pavement. Jack looks down as his eyes catches an old black lady sitting against the robot pole, staring blankly down the passage next to the building they just walked out of. He cant help but
