About this ebook

The Big Fella: Babe Ruth and the World He Created by Jane Leavy: Conversation Starters

The "Symphony of Swat" was a show bigger than other circuses that ever toured the country. Award-winning sports writer Jane Leavy recounts the tour that brought baseball legend Babe Ruth closer to his fans around America. In September 1927, Babe Ruth hit his record-breaking 60th home run and started his three-week barnstorming travels across America. Touring with famed teammate Lou Gehrig, the event is told by Leavy, painting Ruth with what critics say as the pathos that appropriately described Ruth's life.

The Big Fella is a New York Times bestseller and is chosen as Best Book of 2018 by Publishers Weekly.

Touring with famed teammate Lou Gehrig, the event was named Symphony of Swat by Ruth's agent Christy Walsh, a show bigger than other circuses that ever toured the country, according to archival accounts. The author recounts the tour, painting it with what critics say as the pathos that appropriately described Ruth's life. The narrative is told in a non-linear way that tells events that happened during the tour as well as retraces Ruth's life before the tour. Leavy takes side roads in her narrative to give readers a bigger view of Ruth's life. The narrative becomes meandering and repetitive as a result but with the effect of giving the story its needed context. Central to the narrative is the focus on the life and character of Babe Ruth. The author explores the motivations of the legendary baseball player and the character of his financial adviser and agent Walsh, who managed the tour and helped create Ruth's
