About this ebook

Doing Justice: A Prosecutor's Thoughts on Crime, Punishment, and the Rule of Law by Preet Bharara: Conversation Starters

After many years of observing and participating in the legal system, making efforts to improve on it, and prosecuting those who try to defy it, US Attorney Preet Bharara writes a book about his legal work. He asserts that as American citizens, people must work to protect the rule of law. They also need to accept the flaws inherent in the system because it is humans who make it work. The New York Journal of Books says the book is essential reading for Americans. It comes at a time when the ideals of truth and justice are under attack.

Doing Justice is the first book of Preet Bharara, the former US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He currently teaches at the New York University School of Law and hosts the podcast Stay Tuned with Preet.

OING JUSTICE: A PROSECUTOR’S THOUGHTS ON CRIME, PUNISHMENT, and the Rule of Law is a book about the American justice system from the perspective of the former federal prosecutor of New York. Written by Preet Bharara, the book argues why the American law system works and how it is a pillar of society. He cites case histories and his experiences as a prosecutor to explain the kind of thinking people need to have to make justice work in society, particularly in their daily lives. His many years of observing and participating in the legal system, making efforts to improve on it, and prosecuting those who try to defy it has been a lifetime preoccupation. He asserts that as American citizens, people must work to protect it. They also need to accept the flaws inherent in the system as a result of the humans who make it work.

The book features the author's case histories and anecdotes that help show how the legal system works. These include stories of failures and successes. It shows the consequences of using the law to take action, as well as not taking action. Bharara inspires hope as he points out the importance of being rational, fact-based, and objective as essential in the pursuit of justice and truth. He also cites the importance of compassion. His discussions touch on some controversial issues, provoking reactions that lead to more discussion. Critics also find it entertaining, especially in the parts where humanity prevails in a system ruled by laws. The book is structured  into four parts that unfold in the way a legal case does. The first part is Inquiry which investigates alleged wrongdoing. The second part is Accusation which pertains to whether an accused should be charged with the alleged wrongdoing. The third part is Judgement
