    Danger Delivered - Whit Bailey

    Blackbird: Chapter 3

    The Rising of the Damned

    The Train

    ––––––––

Arthur! Millie shouts as the blood spray dots her face.

Arthur screams and grabs his thigh. He’s been shot. The blood drains beneath his grip, flowing into his seat. He convulses, on the verge of shock.

Millie steadies him. She looks at the shooter—Augustine Adler— and fears another blast from his gun.

The maniac’s barrel smokes above them, but doesn’t deliver lead.

Leonard growls and lunges for Augustine.

The gunman grabs him in mid-air and tosses him across the train car. Leonard crashes into the seats. The other passengers do not move to help him, as if they don’t notice the chaos in the train car.

Augustine turns back to Millie just in time to see her holding her own gun. She fires into his gut.

He staggers backward against the wall, holding the smoking hole in his belly.

    He smiles.

    Millie doesn’t see any blood.

She fires again. And again. The bullets thump into Augustine’s torso. Wincing, he steps forward after every gunblast.

    Click. Click. Click.

Millie realizes the gun’s chamber is empty as Augustine grabs her wrists and squeezes. She cries out in pain and drops the gun.

Leave her alone, you madman! Leonard snarls, tackling Augustine and crashing into the wall. The two of them wrestle, and Augustine twists Leonard’s arm behind him and thrusts him against the wall, face first.

Leonard hears the click of a bullet entering the chamber of a six-shooter.

My gun’s not empty, boy, Augustine tells him. Now, get on up and help your daddy before I vent your brain.

Leonard bites his lower lip and steps away. He joins Millie in helping calm Arthur.

You're a feisty bunch, Augustine says.
