Once Upon a River: A Novel by Diane Setterfield: Conversation Starters

One dark night during a 19th-century winter, people who lived near the Thames river gathered in an old inn to tell stories to while away the slow hours. The door suddenly opens to reveal an injured man struggling to carry a lifeless child's body in his arms. The small girl is apparently dead but a few hours afterward, she stirs back to life. The townspeople think it's magic or a miracle.
The child, being mute, cannot reveal anything about herself. Three different families believe that the child is theirs but they also have secrets that have to be unraveled before the girl's identity is truly known.

    Introducing Once Upon A River

    O

NCE UPON A RIVER IS A NOVEL THAT HIGHLIGHTS THE CRAFT OF storytelling and the ways that people create tales. It is written by Diane Setterfield.

One dark night during a 19th-century winter, people who lived near the Thames river gathered in an old inn to tell stories to while away the slow hours. The door suddenly opens to reveal an injured man struggling to carry a lifeless child's body in his arms. The small girl is apparently dead but a few hours afterward, she stirs back to life, surprising everybody. The townspeople wonder how it is possible and think of magic or miracles to explain it. They try to come up with explanations and various answers that range from science to the dark arts. The mystery only gets deeper as the child, being mute, cannot reveal anything about herself. Three families believe that the child is theirs. One of them is a young mother whose daughter had been kidnapped two years ago. Another is a family of farmers who believe the child is their wayward son's illegitimate daughter. The housekeeper of the parson thinks the girl is her younger sister. The truth is that the small girl cannot be everybody's child. Each of the families has their reasons she is theirs but they also have secrets that haunt them. Their secrets have to be unraveled before the girl's identity can truly be known.

The title indicates that the novel is all about storytelling. There are times in the book when the narrator addresses the readers as if they are in the room listening to her. It is a book meant to be read silently, the author says, but she still included parts where the oral narration is possible to give readers a feel of the storytelling experience with children. According to Setterfield, the novel is centered on the idea that human beings tell stories to explain how things that are seemingly impossible came to be.
