    TOGETHER AT LAST

    PART 3

    ROMANTIC SUSPENSE

    BY N.A. VIOLET

    TOGETHER AT LAST

Karen wailed quietly to Dorie.  Why did I have to make him watch that video?

I honestly don't know. There was a reason. I don't know what it was, but we'll figure it out.

I hope so. I love working with him. I could watch him shoot people all day.

Karen sat in a booth in a local diner near their hotel. Dorie sat on the table contained in a square tablet computer propped up near the ketchup and 'Today's Specials'.

Karen continued, I didn't need to bring it up. When I did it, I didn't like him yet. He didn't like me. He wouldn't have thought about it ever. Karen slumped in her seat. I'm the most miserable woman in all of creation.

Dorie didn't smile, but she thought about it. It will all work out. Just wait.

Al and John sat down in the booth. The waitress took their order and went away.

John put himself across the booth from Karen. She had to glare at him. She thought, Why am I doing this? I want him. He's big. He's got tattoos and scars. I've never wanted a man more in my life. Why am I glaring at him?

John said, "Alright. Here's the situation. Someone took a shot at Aaron Chastain yesterday from very long range. We think it was almost 2,000 yards.

Al interrupted, "They changed the rules. Before, we were talking blackmail and beatings. Now, it's murder.

John continued, That's absolutely right. Aaron would be dead right now if he hadn't turned to talk to someone coming through the door. The shooter put the round downrange when Aaron was facing away from him. It should have been a chest shot. Aaron turned to his left, presenting the shooter with his profile. The bullet which would have gone through the left center of the chest grazed Aaron. It put a furrow across his chest a quarter of an inch deep. We have to make some assumptions. We have some intel that Bill Conyers is out of it. He apparently has some scruples, a rarity in defense procurement. He's going to limit himself to the usual procurement process; giving bribes, making promises of cushy jobs after retirement to the procurement officers and taking everybody he can find out to dinner. So we're going to concentrate on Lamont Drummond. He'll never do anything as subtle as a bribe. He's truly a bullet in the center-of-mass kind of guy.

Al said, So we put him under surveillance and try to get more intel?

Unfortunately, Drummond has locked down his people. He's got a compound in the desert west of the city. All of his employees who are participating in the thing are inside and can't get out. Internet access is monitored. There's only one phone and it's in his pocket. We can't get anyone inside and they don't communicate to anyone outside. John leaned back. That sounds discouraging; and it is, but we're creative. We'll find a way inside.

Al responded, It all depends on the definition of 'locked'. Very few buildings are completely, permanently closed. It's always a compromise. Here's my idea...

He talked for less than a minute. Everyone complimented him, except Karen who continued to glare at him and die slowly from a broken heart.
