Introduction
Congratulations on making the biggest and best decision of your life! You have chosen to follow Jesus Christ, and you have a lot to look forward to, so much to learn, and so many blessings. He has big plans for you, and I hope these 100 Scriptures and devos will help guide you as you choose to give each new day to Him. Arm yourself with the Bible, pray through every challenge, and watch yourself grow closer to God each day.
Expect Nothing in Return
But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is gracious to the ungrateful and evil. Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.
—Luke 6:35–36
Before these two verses, Luke mentions how it is easy to love those who love us in return, to be good to those who are good to us in return, and to loan to those who we know will repay us. But, the Gospel calls us to love, do good, and provide for others even if they do not love us, treat us well, or provide for us in return. The reason we are called to live this way is because Christ loves us even when we are unloving, He is good to us even when we are ungrateful, and He provides for us although we have nothing to offer Him. Christ loves expecting nothing in return; therefore, we are to love others with such mercy.
Insults
You are blessed when they insult and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of Me.
—Matthew 5:11
There will be times when people are unkind to you because you are a Christian. Christ tells us to consider ourselves blessed when this happens. Most of the time, we want to feel sorry for ourselves when people say mean things about us; but Christ shows us that when those comments are made because of what we believe, then we should consider ourselves blessed. The greater blessing is being in a relationship with the Lord, not receiving someone else’s approval for what we believe.
Love Your Enemies
You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.
—Matthew 5:43–45
One of the hardest things to do is be nice to someone who is cruel to us. Yet, this is what God calls us to do. Christ says to love our enemies, but what does that look like? The command to love our enemies does not mean becoming BFFs with them. If someone (usually at your age it is a girl) has really hurt us, we should check our heart and make sure we are not harboring bad thoughts or feelings toward her, but we do not have to invite her to a sleepover. We can love her from a distance. For example, we can pray for her when God brings her to mind.
It seems impossible to love people who are mean to us, but when we stop and look at what Christ did for us, when we were His enemies, we realize that not only is it possible to love mean people, it is really the least we can do because of what has been done for us.
Genuine Love
Love must be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good.
—Romans 12:9
It is hypocritical if we say we love our mom then talk poorly about her to our friends. It is hypocritical if we say we love our siblings but do not have their backs at school when someone picks on them. Genuine love is holding our tongue when we want to say something negative about someone we love, and it is standing up for those we love. If we say we love someone, we need to genuinely love that person by having our actions back up the love we profess for him or her.
Honor One Another
Show family affection to one another with brotherly love. Outdo one another in showing honor.
—Romans 12:10
If you have a loving family, then you know what it is to give and receive family affection.
A smile crosses your face when you remember your family vacations, holiday traditions, and weekly family routines from meals at the dinner table to movie
