Surrealities, Part V

About this ebook
From the mind of storyteller J. Dean comes the "Surrealities," short story series, a concept rooted in and inspired by weekly television serials such as The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, and The Outer Limits, and classic radio serials such as Suspense, Dimension X, Lights Out, and other regular tales that take the imagination to the heights of exhilaration and the depths of fear.
In the Story "Man's Last Night," a hotshot video game player is challenged to a match where the stakes may be higher than he bargained for. Meanwhile, two competing parties converge together at the request of a brilliant scientist who has something both groups want in the tale "The Greater Good."
J. Dean
"Taking fantasy in a completely unique direction."This is what J. Dean intends to do with the Vein series. Instead of following the tried and true methods and paths of familiar fantasy mythos, he created an original world for an epic story. From his Michigan residence, he captures the fantasy world of the Vein (and other stories) and imprisons them upon paper, until the day when the words are set free by the imagination of those willing to read them. The Vein series is J. Dean's first venture into serious writing, and he hopes that you will join him on the twists and turns of this ride that is part excitement, part drama, part terror, and all adventure.

Man’s Last Night
"Michael Coleman! Get off that game and get the door!"
Michael sighed, muttering about a hot place where his mother should go. Just a sec, guys. Real life. Hold things down,
he said into his headset. He removed it after setting his controller down. Onscreen, his soldier hid behind a bullet-riddled wall, safe for the moment.
He walked up the basement stairs and to the front door. Hold on!
he snapped at the persistent raps. Who is it?
Open up, Michael,
answered an unfamiliar, feminine voice. Michael rubbed a hand down his faded green T-shirt: a little wrinkled, but he could live with it. Besides, he actually showered today. He’d smell acceptable for a little while.
He pulled on the doorknob, revealing the visitor. She stood a little taller than himself: that wasn’t saying much, considering Michael barely reached five and a half feet. Her bangs fell forward in a pink-tinged skater cut, while the rest of her scalp had been sheared to the skin. A pair of thick, squared glasses sat on her diminutive nose. Her curvy, attractive figure was clad in a tie-dyed T-shirt predominantly shaded in pink and a pair of jeans shredded and tattered with fashion-inspired cuts
Her familiar facial features resonated within Michael, and his mouth fell open. As she walked past him and into the hallway, he still couldn’t bring himself to say her name. Not until she turned around and confirmed her identity with her question: So where’s your console?
You’re her!
He finally blurted out. You’re KraZeeKat!
Congratulations,
she replied flatly. Are we gonna do this or not?
But… but where have you been?
Michael asked. Her calm demeanor did nothing to placate his shock.
"Michael! Who’s there?"
He looked at the door muffling his mother’s voice, then back at the visitor. Ah… nobody, Mom!
he cried. Pizza guy. Had the wrong address!
Oh, so I’m a nobody now?
the girl quipped.
"Better not be one of your friends, Michael!" the disembodied voice warned. I don’t want people over when I’m not home.
"You don’t want people over when you are home, he mumbled. A little louder, he said
Wasn’t a friend of mine, Mom!"
KraZeeKat folded her arms while blowing a strand of stray pink hair from her face. She looked at him with an impatient frown. What?
Michael asked, careful to keep his volume down.
Let’s get this over with, Michael. I’ve come a long way to take you on, and I really don’t want to waste it standing around here.
She pointed toward the descending staircase. You play down there?
she asked.
Wait a minute. Wait a minute here,
he said, shaking his head. His hands came up in a gesture of surrender. What’s going on. You… you haven’t been heard from by anybody in or out of the gaming community in nine months, and now, all of a sudden, you show up at my house? I don’t even know you personally!
Is your console downstairs or not?
Well yeah, but—
Then let’s get to it, shall we?
Michael’s already open mouth dropped even further down. Get to what?
Get to your challenge,
she answered as she walked toward the stairway. She stopped and looked back at him in frustration. "You did challenge me the other night, right? she asked.
Said it to your friends while you were playing Man’s Last Night. You told them that you wished you could’ve met me before I disappeared. Told them that you could beat my game record, the one I set on Nightmare Four level."
Michael could feel his face morphing into a perplexed scowl. How could you know that?
he demanded. I was in a private game with my friends!
From what I heard, you said it loud enough and often enough that gamers in China could’ve heard you. Matter of fact, you were being pretty cocky about it. Or was it angry?
A soft, teasing smile crossed KraZeeKat’s lips. A mixture of combustible heat and embarrassment bubbled up within Michael. The shock and awe related to the sudden appearance of this girl that nobody had heard from in nine months was taking a backseat to resentment at her challenge. Here she was, no longer missing, and now, all of a sudden, she had the gall to challenge him? Who did she think he was?
No way, he thought. No way this
