Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities
Rebecca SolnitThere’s probably no better book that captures the spirit of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign than Rebecca Solnit’s “Hope in the Dark,” about activists not losing faith and giving into cynicism during hard times. Solnit argues that forward progress sometimes zigs and zags, and Ocasio-Cortez’s election win seems to prove the theses of this book for progressives.
Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln
Doris Kearns GoodwinWritten by Doris Kearns Goodwin, one of our greatest contemporary historians, this look at Abraham Lincoln’s presidency focuses specifically on his laudable leadership skills, as he worked together with his rivals to win the Civil War. As Republicans and Democrats become deeper and deeper shades of red and blue, this is an important reminder about the strength of embracing diversity, across many spectrums.
The Bhagavad Gita
Eknath EaswaranThe Bhagavad Gita is one of the most thought-provoking spiritual texts that has much to teach about what’s truly important in life. A must-read for just about anybody, but in particular if you’re a yogi or interested in Hinduism.
