AT Action Plan

I encounter many students that are unable to take notes. Often I am asked to give them a copy of my plans and notes. Sometimes they have a one-on-one Para Educator that assists in this process, and sometimes not. However, many problems arise. Because of these circumstances is why I am establishing an Assistive Technology Action Plan. I always provide the student with anticipated lecture and activity notes but often times the class goes in a different, and often rewarding, direction. My dilemma is, how do I provide notes for the student when the topic, issue or assignment was spontaneous. Add this quandary to the fact that most students do not have a one-on-one, and many do not even have a Para. When these times arise I am forced into two possible solutions. One is trying to remember what was discussed and provide notes for the student at the end of the meeting or later that day. Of course this practice has its flaw; whether or not I include everything that was discussed in my notes. The second is to copy another students notes. This is not good practice either because it is difficult to ensure they are legible, accurate, and complete. Also these practices place much of the emphasis on me, the teacher, and a fellow student instead of the student who is suffering. Instead of these inconsistent practices, I would like to establish a proven method in which the student themselves is active and responsible for the note taking process. There are many methods to achieve this. Some are readily available, some are free, and some cost money. I would begin with the low cost methods and work up to the expensive services (unless I noticed the student was in obvious jeopardy), closely monitor the method and results, all the while staying in constant contact with the Special Educator. Possible accommodations: (in addition to proving anticipated notes) A seat in the front, or away from any distractions Video recording Voice recorder Dragon Diction: voice to text, or text to speech Live Scribe : a digital pen that records voice as well as text. (really has to seen to believe) MS One Note: digital pen Notability App for I pad: records audio + video while allowing student to type, scribble or draw simultaneously.
