    Avril Lavigne Born in Belleville, Ontario Avril Ramona Lavigne began singing church songs with her mother,

    Judith-Rosanne. Her mother recognized Avril's talent as of being two years old after she heard her sing "Jesus Loves Me" in church. School was not her thing but her parents still supported her singing. When Avril turned five, the family moved to Napanee, Ontario. Her father turned their basement into a studio of their own and purchased her a microphone, a drum kit, a keyboard, and several guitars. Avril got taken to karaokee sessions at the age of fourteen by her parents. She started to perform at country fairs and soon enough wrote her own songs. Avril's first song was called "Can't Stop Thinking About You", it was about a teenage crush which she described as "cheesy cute".

    Avril won a radio contest to perform with a Canadian singer Shania Twain in 1999. Avril later on gets spotted with the Lennox Community Theatre during a performance by a local folksinger, Stephen Medd. He wanted her to contribute her vocals for his 1999 album and she does it. Avril does the same for his follow-up album in 2000. Before 2000, she gets discovered by her first professional manager, Cliff Fabri, while performing country covers at Chapters in Kingston, Ontario. VHS tapes of Avril's home performances were sent out to several industry propects by him. By that, she was visited by many executives. Co-founder Mark Jowett, of the Canadian management firm Nettwerk, recieved a copy of Avril's karaokee performances recorded in her basement. That led her to work with Peter Zizzo during the summer of 2000 in New York, where she wrote the song "Why". Arista Records notice Avril on a subsequent trip to New York.

    Avril Lavigne later on became one of the top-selling artists releasing albums in the U.S. She sold more than 30 million copies of her albums worldwide, with over 10.25 million copies ceritfied by the RIAA. Billboard named Avril the NO. 10 pop artist in the "Best of the 2000s" chart in 2009. She was overall listed as the 28th best act of the decade based on album and single chart performance in the U.S.
