CAAEX 20
Application of Unit:
This unit applies to learners wanting to develop learning skills for self, employment, education and/or community participation. Learners will start to examine their learning through the course of their study. They will choose and present pieces of work that represents their progress to demonstrate that they have reached ACSF 2 across the 5 areas as well as gaining the computing skills. The folio will be used to apply for the Certificate 1 in Education and Skills Development qualification, but could also be used as evidence for applying for employment, for a course or to present to a case worker. This unit can only be completed concurrently with at least one, but preferably more, units of competency, from which to choose assessment pieces. It can also be used as part of a case management process along with Negotiate a learning plan, CAAEW. This unit should ensure the learner has the necessary skills to achieve level 2 of the ACSF indicators of competence for learning. See Australian Core Skills framework levels of Performance for more detail. http://deewr.gov.au/SKILLS/PROGRAMS/LITANDNUM/ACSF/Pages/default.aspx To achieve competence in this unit the young person must be able to discuss the purpose of the folio, compile an evidence folio incorporating different types of evidence from a range of units and with support, choose from a broader range of evidence, that which best meets the purpose of the folio.
Evidence Guide:
Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit: This unit requires the young person to collect material, assemble, maintain and safely store a portfolio. This portfolio should reflect the young persons future goals and pathways and will need to be regularly reviewed over a period of time. The ability to discuss the contents of the portfolio will be essential.
Consistency of performance:
To ensure consistency of performance over the range statements and contexts, this unit must be assessed over a period of time.

What is a portfolio?
A portfolio is a collection of carefully selected work that showcases your achievements for the Cert 1 ESD and the progress you have made.
Growth Portfolio
This portfolio includes work that shows your progress over time. It can be used to help you reflect on what you have learnt and then work out future goals for learning. The main purpose of this portfolio is to show progress.
Showcase Portfolio
This portfolio is like your own personal brag book as it shows all the great work you have done and your achievements. The main purpose of this portfolio is to show your best work and the final products.
Evaluation Portfolio
This portfolio is where you show that you have achieved the learning outcomes for a particular course you may be doing. The main purpose for this portfolio is to demonstrate you have achieved the learning requirements. A portfolio may include elements of all the different types and be used for a range of different things. The Cert 1 ESD portfolio is mainly an Evaluation portfolio and will be used to demonstrate that you have achieved the outcomes for the Certificate 1 ESD. However, there are certainly elements of all three portfolios included, as there will be the opportunity to look at some your early work and reflect on the progress you have made (Growth Portfolio) and you may want to share your portfolio with others and show off all your great work (Showcase Portfolio).
