Homework

Homework is an important part of the first grade curriculum. I designed the homework program to meet the needs of the student as well as fit in with healthy family life. The most crucial bit of homework that your first grader has is daily reading. She/He checks out 2 books each day. One is for an adult to read to the child. The other is on the childs level, to be read to an adult. The child should read that one about three times to improve fluency. When the child returns the next morning she/he will read to a volunteer, then choose 2 more books to check out. The books should be returned daily in the homework folder. In addition to the reading, your child will get a few homework pages on Mondays to complete each week. These reinforce and review math and language skills. These are due on Thursdays. This method gives families some scheduling flexibility. The homework pages are to be done with adult assistance. Please encourage your child to do his/her best and neatest work. We want to instill the value of integrity in the students. Spelling words come home on Mondays, also. Please review these with your child. The tests are on Fridays. Sight words that we have studied during the week will come home on Fridays. Please add these to the others your child is bringing home. Periodically review them with your child. She/He should be able to call each word within 3 seconds. You might try seeing if your child can improve her/his time. I hope homework time is enjoyable for you and your first grader. I know how much they take pride in sharing what they know with you.
