Eighners essay demonstrated how Americans are so wasteful; it is relatively easy to survive off of their discarded waste. Americans make it relatively easy for people to be homeless, useful food gets thrown away daily, giving homeless people dinner. If you walk through alleys and search dumpsters, youre almost certain to find a can of soup or sandwhich meat that only expired a couple of days earlier. Eighner explains, Many are discarded for minor imperfections that can be pared away (256). Now that homeless person has dinner. Eighner says, I tend to gain weight when I am scavenging. Partly this is because I always find far more pizza and doughnuts than water-packed tuna, nonfat yogurt, and fresh vegetablses (259). Not only food is wasteful to Americans. Eighner concludes, I am grateful, however, for the number of good books and magazines the students throw out (262).
