ANODIZING OF ALUMINIUM
AIM: To anodize the given Aluminium strip

APPARATUS REQUIRED: 1. Constant current source 2. Aluminum strip 3. Lead strip 4. Electrolyte solution 10% H2SO4 5. Cleaning agent (5% NaOH, 25% HNO3, Acetone)

PARAMETERS: Length of Aluminium strip = Breadth of Aluminium strip= Current = Voltage = Time = Current density = Anode - Aluminium Cathode Lead

THEORY:

Aluminium is a reactive element but develops an Al2O3 coating film that protects it from corrosion in many environments. This film is quite stable in neutral and many acid solutions but attacked by alkalis. This oxide film forms in many atmospheres, but it can be artificially produced by passing electric current, this process is called anodizing. The high copper alloys are utilized mainly for structural purposes. The copper free or low copper alloys are used in the process industries or were better corrosion resistance is required. Other properties contributing to its widespread application are thermal conductivity, colorlessness, reflectivity, lightness or good strength to weight ratio.

PROCEDURE: 1. First we have to prepare the solution and clean the sample by polishing it.
2.

Keep the Aluminium as anode and Lead as cathode.

3. After polishing the sample, wash it with the solution prepared. 4. Before washing, we have to put the sample in a solution for 30 minutes and finally the oxide film is observed.

RESULT: Thus anodizing of Aluminium was done and thick coherent oxide layer of Al2O3 was formed.
