NORTHEAST BOUNDARY NEIGHBORHOOD PROTECTION PROJECT UPDATE

DC Waters Clean Rivers Project continues its preliminary investigation work for the First Street Tunnel portion of the Northeast Boundary Neighborhood Protection Project. The geotechnical team recently completed drilling at the corner of First and Channing Streets, NW near a future shaft for the tunnel which will be constructed on the former McMillan Sand Filtration site.

The information from this boring and eight other locations in the Bloomingdale neighborhood will be used to develop a baseline for the tunnel and shaft design. Design engineers and Drill rig and work zone set up for test boring on Channing Street. construction contractors will use data collected to determine the structural elements such as the tunnel and shaft lining thickness and the appropriate means and methods for the shafts and mine the tunnel. With two of nine borings along First Street now complete, DC Water estimates that all the drilling at this location will be done in February 2013, weather permitting.
