Aimee Mullins is munching French toast at her favourite greasy spoon in Manhattan's West Village. She's tall, slim and blonde with wide, hazel eyes, wearing Stella McCartney cords and high-heeled sandals. It's only when she hoists a leg up on the table and reminds me that it's fake, that the illusion of physical perfection is shattered. Aimee, 25, had both legs amputated just below the knee when she was a year old. She was born without a fibula in her lower legs, possibly caused by her mother taking antibiotics before she knew she was pregnant. The next few years were spent in a wheelchair, and doctors warned that she would never walk. Unfazed, Aimee taught herself to walk with artificial legs and by the age of 10, she was also running, skiing and playing softball. "My parents never told me that I couldn't do something," she says. "They expected me to excel." And she did. Aimee did her internship at the Pentagon, broke world records in the 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump at the 1996 Paralympics, and has been voted one of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People.

The Project 3.1 Instructions: read and answer the questions

Why Physical Activity is Important for You?

People need to be active to be healthy. Our modern lifestyle and all the conveniences we've become used to have made us sedentary - and that's dangerous for our health. Sitting around in front of the TV or the computer, riding in the car for even a short trip to the store and using elevators instead of stairs or ramps all contribute to our inactivity. Physical inactivity is as dangerous to our health as smoking! Add up your activities during the day in periods of at least 10 minutes each. Start slowly... and build up. If you're already doing some light activities move up to more moderateones. A little is good, but more is better if you want to achieve health benefits. Scientists say accumulate 60 minutes of physical activity every day to stay healthy or improve your health. Time needed depends on effort - as you progress to moderateactivities, you can cut down to thirty minutes, four days a week. Physical activity doesn't have to be very hard to improve your health. This goal can bereached by building physical activities into your daily routine. Just add up in periods of atleast ten minutes each throughout the day. After three months of regular physical activity, you will notice a difference - people often say getting started is the hardest part.(From Handbook for Canada's Physical Activity Guide to Healthy Active Living p. 4. Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, Ottawa, Ontario, 1998)

Lesson 4C.Transportation in Costa Rica Reading Comprehension

There are rent-a-cars in Costa Rica, in the airport, in the capital city of San Jose and other cities and in some rural areas. Lots of these cars are four-wheel drives, but they're not used only for rural roads, since potholes abound in main streets in major cities. Lately, the roads have been well-marked and one can get maps and directions from the ICT (Tourism Bureau) in downtown San Jose, under the Plaza de la Cultura. Trains are a great option for more romantic or adventuresome tourists, but there are also buses in Costa Rica, and plenty of them for that matter. There are also other means of transportation like taxis, rent-a-cars, planes, helicopters and some trains. Costa Rica might not be as advanced as other countries in many respects, but it does offer many different and for the most part, cheap options for getting around the country.

Exercise 7 (check your answers on page 143).

the way to school. But she couldn't sit still. Ms. Sentence, the

teacher, tapped her ruler on her desk and said, "Anna, SIT STILL!" "Yes, ma'am," Anna said as she picked up her pencil. When the class lined up for Art, Patrick Pronoun whispered, "You'd better stop being so active. You'll get into trouble." But Anna was seeing how long she could hop on one foot and not trip over Donna. The Art teacher, Mrs. Preposition, was showing the class how to draw snowflakes when Anna tipped over in her chair. Then she did five somersaults right into a table. Anna got a bruise on her forehead and had to go to the nurse. Then Mr. Noun, the principal, wrote a note home to Anna's parents. And can you guess what Mr. and Mrs. Action/Verb decided? No gymnastics, Anna's favorite class, for a week! So Anna learned to do flips only in gymnastics and to learn in school instead.

The project 7.1. Read and answer the questions. Mr. Williams was always a very careful driver
As one approaches some crossroads, one comes to a sign which says that drivers have to stop when they come to the main road ahead. At other crossroads, drivers have to go slow, but they do not actually have to stop (unless, of course, there is something coming along the main road); and at still others, they do not have either to stop or to go slow, because they are themselves on the main road. Mr. Williams, who was always a very careful driver, was driving home from work one evening when he came to a crossroads. It had a Slow sign, so he slowed down when he came to the main road, looked both ways to see that nothing was coming, and then drove across without stopping completely. At once he heard a police whistle, so he pulled in to the side of the road and stopped. A policeman walked over to him with a notebook and pencil in his hand and said, You didnt stop at the crossing. But the sign there doesnt say Stop, answered Mr Williams. It just says Slow, and I did go slow. The policeman looked around him, and a look of surprise came over his face. Then he put his notebook and pencil away, scratched his head and said, Well, Ill be blowed I am in the wrong street!

The project 8.1. Reading Comprehension Mr Joness house, coming from the direction of the town
Mr Jones woke early one morning, before the sun had risen. It was a beautiful morning, so he went to the window and looked out. He was surprised to see a neatly dressed, middle-aged professor, who worked in the university just up the road from Mr Joness house, coming from the direction of the town. He had grey hair and thick glasses, and was carrying an umbrella, a morning newspaper and a bag. Mr Jones thought that he must have arrived by the night train and decided to walk to the university instead of taking a taxi. Mr Jones had a big tree in his garden, and the children had tied a long rope to one of its branches, so that they could swing on it. Mr Jones was surprised to see the professor stop when he saw the rope, and look carefully up and down the road. When he saw that there was nobody in sight, he stepped into the garden (there was no fence), put his umbrella, newspaper, bag and hat neatly on the grass and took hold of the rope. He pulled it hard to see whether it was strong enough to take his weight, then ran as fast as he could and swung into the air on the end of the rope, his grey hair blowing all around his face. Backwards and forwards he swung, occasionally taking a few more running steps on the grass when the rope began to swing too slowly for him. At last the professor stopped, straightened his tie, combed his hair carefully, put on his hat, picked up his umbrella, newspaper and bag, and continued on his way to the university, looking as quiet and correct and respectable as one would expect a professor to be.

QUESTION I. Choose a, b or c in each question below. Only one choice is correct. (1.5 points) 1. The university was a. near Mr Joness house. b. far from Mr Joness house. c. next to Mr Joness house.

3. Reading Comprehension Read and answer the questions Jobs for the boys!
Forget Mary Poppins - a nineties nanny is more likely to resemble cuddly Martin Smith who, at 22, is one of the new breed of British male nannies. I love being around kids and nannying is very rewarding. The money isn't great, but then I don't do it for the money. I like seeing kids happy and, if they are, it makes my job a whole lot easier, laughs Martin. He claims today's nannies are better equipped and more highly qualified, and that their image is changing rapidly. Anyone with basic school qualifications can do the course to become a nanny, but personality is really more important. I'm a good nanny because I have a rapport with youngsters and babies - it isn't a gift exclusive to women. His female counterparts have welcomed Martin, although some chauvinistic men think his chosen career makes him a bit `soft'. I feel sorry for them, he sighs, Just because I work with women and kids, it doesn't mean I'm feminine or strange. But he admits that it will be some time before male nannies are totally accepted. It'll happen gradually, but there's no reason why men can't do this job as well as women.

Questions
1. Answer the following questions using your own words.

a) According to the text, what is the most important quality you need to be a capable nanny? b) How have people reacted to Martin's choice of job?

135

2. Are the following statements true (T) or false (F)? a) In spite of the salary, Martin likes his job very much. b) Men can be better nannies because they are better qualified.

3. Find a word or phrase in the text which, in context, is similar in meaning to: a) giving personal satisfaction, worthwhile b) people who have a similar job, function or position.

4. Choose a, b, or c, in each question below. Only one choice is correct. 1. Nowadays nannies ... a) earn a lot of money. b) change their image many times. c) are better trained than before.

5. Martin believes that he is an excellent nanny because ... a) he has the right qualifications. b) he understands children's feelings very well. c) being a nanny isn't exclusive to women.

6. Martin's job choice hasn't been well regarded by ... a) some men. b) some old-fashioned male nannies. c) some people.

7. Martin considers that ... a) male nannies won't have a good reputation in the future. b) men can't work as nannies as well as women. c) men can be just as good nannies as women.

The Project 9.1 Instructions: read and answer the questions Community Helpers
Doctors are responsible for the diagnosis, care and treatment of illnesses, diseases, infections and well-being of people. They may work in a variety of settings such as in a hospital or as a family doctor. Hospital doctors can go on to specialize in particular areas of medicine such as pathology, psychiatry and pediatrics, or surgery, such as orthopedics and ophthalmology. Learning to be a doctor involves a long and expensive course of study. You will generally spend 5 years as an undergraduate at medical school. You will then become a preregistration house officer for one year. After this year, you can apply to the American Medical Association to become a fully licensed doctor. You will then have at least 3 more years of further education to become a family doctor or at least 7 years to become a hospital consultant. Contemporary medicine is challenging and exciting. Countless new discoveries are making their impact on medical practice, and doctors now qualifying will see even more dramatic changes in the future, with the development of many new techniques, involving not only drugs, but methods arising from research in electronics, nuclear physics, genetics and molecular biology.
