Name of Drug Mode of Action Anti inflammatory , analgesic, and antipyretic activities related to inhibition of prostaglandi n synthesis; exact mechanisms of action are not known. Route and Dosage Actual: Indications Contraindications Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to mefenamic acid, aspirin allergy, and as treatment of perioperative pain with coronary artery bypass grafting. Use cautiously with asthma, renal or hepatic impairment, peptic ulcer disease, GI bleeding, hypertension, heart failure, pregnancy and lactation. Side Effects Watch out for: Rash Diarrhea Digestive problem Sore throat Fever Itching Weight gain Swelling in ankles or fingers Changes in vision Black, tarry stool Right upper abdominal pain Flulike symptoms Adverse Reactions CNS: Headache, dizziness, somnolence, insomnia, fatigue, tiredness, tinnitus, ophthalmic effects Dermatologic: Rash, pruritus, sweating, dry mucous membrane, stomatitis GI: Nausea, dyspepsia, GI pain,diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, flatulence GU: Dysuria, renal impairment Hematologic: Bleeding, platelet inhibition with higher doses, neutropenia, eosinophilia, Nursing Responsibilities Always observe for the 10 rights in giving medication. Instruct client to take drug with food. Administer only the prescribed dosage. Do not administer the drug longer than 1 week. Tell the client the importance of taking the drug. Tell the client about the side effects and adverse reactions of the drug. Instruct client to discontinue drug and consult the physician if rash, diarrhea or digestive problem occurs.
