Name of Drug Mode of Action Bactericidal: inhibits synthesis of bacterial cell wall, causing cell death. Route and Dosage Actual: Cefuroxime 750 mg q8 IVTT ANST Indications Bone and joint infections due to S. aureus Contraindications Contraindicated with allergy to cephalosporins or penicillins. Use cautiously with renal failure, lactation and pregnancy. Side Effects Watch out for: Adverse Reactions Nursing Responsibilities Always observe for the 10 rights in drug administration. Before giving drug, ask pt. if shes allergic to penicillins or cephalosporins. Tell the pt. the importance of drug to be administered. Tell pt. the side effects and adverse effects of the drug. Reconstitute each 750 mg vial with 8 ml of sterile water for injection. Withdraw entire contents of vial for a dose. Infuse drug over 15 to 60 mins. Instruct client to notify prescriber about rash, loose stools, diarrhea, or evidence of superinfection. Advise pt. receiving drug IV to report discomfort at IV insertion site.
