Throughout the whole process, I encountered a lot of problems but after some short discussions with him, I solved the problems easily. ABSTRACT/ SUMMARY In this coursework for Childrens Literature (LGA 3101), we are ask to work in pairs and to collect samples of materials from various literary genres to be used with Year 3 pupils of average English proficiency. The materials should be at least 3 poems, 3 short stories and 1 short play. In choosing the materials, we must also make sure that the materials should serve as a bibliotherapy to year 3 pupils of average English proficiency. After that, using the materials that we selected we must prepare at least 2 teaching-learning activities. The most important thing is we must justify our choice of material and teaching-learning activity based on pedagogical principles.

Lesson Plan Poem 1

Set Induction For induction, we play a song entitled The Finger Family

(http://www.muffinsongs.com). We ask the pupils to listen to the song and read the lyrics on the screen. Then, we assist them to sing the song together. The lyrics are about family. We want them to introduce their family. Indirectly, this lesson will help to strengthen the bond between them and their families.

Presentation We begin with reciting a poem entitled My Sunshine to the whole class. We emphasize our reading at certain vocabulary in order to introduce them with the words. After reciting the poem, we show the pictures of family to the pupils to make them understand better.

Practice

For this stage, we ask them to make a family tree using manila card with the technique mix and match pictures and words. Each of the pupil have to draw his/her family tree. Then, they have to come to the front and introduce their family members in full sentences. They need to use correct grammar.

Production

Pupils will have to write down a short essay on their family for the teacher to check the writing and grammar. Speaking skill is acquired when the pupils share their stories with the whole class. By doing this, we can help the pupils to be comfortable with the language.

Closure

Teacher helps the pupils to build their confident level. The main objective is to show the important of good relationship with family.

Set Induction Teacher starts to play the song of Baa Baa Black Sheep and asks students to sing along. This induction will help to attract pupils attention when they are singing together. Besides, it will create a fun learning environment for the pupils. Besides, teacher asks how many of pupils have pet at their homes and name them to create a meaningful learning where pupils can relate things that they know or they own with the lesson.

Presentation Teacher recites a poem entitled Pets and Me to the class. Then. Teacher assists them to recognize the animals and the sounds that can be found in the poem. The pupils need to list down all the name of animals and their sounds.

Practice

The pupils is divided into five groups. Each group is provided with three pictures and three name of animals. The pupils have to match the picture of animal with their name. Then, they need to produce the sounds of the animals with expression. By doing this, pupils can feel the excitement of learning in different way (that is by animating).

Production

After the presentation, teacher provides the students with worksheet to brush up their new vocabulary. Mark is recorded for further achievement updates.

Closure

Teacher ask pupils about the moral values that can be gained through this lesson.

2.0 Short Story PETS AND ME At the back of Tok Wans house there is a farm with many kinds of animals. I love to look at the green farm. While I am talking to Tok Wan, suddenly a cute brown cat comes to me. It is jumping here and there cheerfully. His eyes are blue in colour and the fur is brown. When Tok Wan calls him, he comes quickly. I try to catch him. Tok Wan tells me that his name is Tommy. Tok Wan says that he has a surprise for me. We walk to the back of the house where Tok Wan owns a big farm. There are a lot of cows in the pen. My eyes stuck at this one cute cub. It has black and white spots on his body. When I come near to him, he moo at me. I laugh happily. I give him a name called Bobby. I goes to Uncle Samys house. He has a bird. I tell Uncle Samy that I want to name the bird before he releases it. I call it Molly. Then, Uncle Samy let Molly fly freely in the sky. Tok Wanmsays that human being must respect and love animals because we are living in the same world together. I nods and promise to Tok Wan that I will never hurt animals. I will love them as I love myself and my family.

MY FIRST LOVE My class is 1 Bestari. I sit beside Mary. The bell rings and wavy hair teacher comes in. She introduces herself as Miss Suzy. She is our class teacher. I like her because she loves to smile. She teaches us English. Then, we introduce ourselves to her. I tell my name, my ambition and my hobby. My first lesson starts. Miss Suzy turns on the radio and we sing the ABC together. I ask Miss Suzy to replay the song because I love it. I explore new vocabulary today. After that, the second bell rings and I go for a recess. Mr Richard is our Mathematics teacher. He teaches us to count. I count using the sticks that he had given to us. The number becomes bigger and bigger. After an hour, the class ends. Mr Richard left us with homework. At home, I feel excited to tell my mom and dad about lesson. I sing the ABC song. Mom smiles happily and gives a hug. Mom advices me to complete my homework and not to waste my time. My dad helps me with the numbers. I love to go to school and I love my teachers. Thank you, teachers!

MY SUNSHINE Today is my parents wedding anniversary. After breakfast, I tell my mom that I will help her to clean the house since today is a good day for her. I love the way she treats me. Shes the one who starts to teach me ABC and 123. She is very patient to take care of me even though I am very naughty. She keeps advising me to be a good girl. Daddy, my hero! Hes the one who always support me. He is my idol. I want to be like him . He has his own firm. A good lawyer and I respect him. He looks fierce but I know deep inside he is a friendly man. For him, family is everything. Every year, we will go for a vacation. My dad always bought me toys and story books as my hobby is reading. He also help me with my homework when he has his free time. Both are my sunshine. This poem is dedicate to them my dearest parents.

Set Induction

Teacher brings the pupils to the library. The pupils are divided into 5 groups. Each group is provided with a story book. The pupils need to read the story within their group members. Each pupil will have their chance to read the story to their group members. This induction will give a rough draft about todays lesson that they are going to learn about short story. This induction is needed in order to provide a contextualized learning where they start to read and imagine the story in the story book.

Presentation We begin our lesson with reading a Picture Book entitled Pets and Me to the pupils. We show the pictures in the book to them to make the story clearer. In our reading, we include an expressive intonation at certain words to attract their attention. By doing this,

we are guiding them to feel the rhythm of English and to create an interesting learning environment instead of reading in a dull way. Also, we move around the class and animate the animals in the book. It will help them to increase their understanding and interest. The book contains large pictures and colourful words that can grasp the pupils attention as well as support for language understanding. The story is contextual because the characters (animals) are familiar with the pupils life.

Practice

For practice, group work still seems to be a good way of teaching. So, in their group, we provided them with the pictures of animal and a plain book. They need to produce a simple scrapbook. We deliver my instruction by asking them to prepare the pictures of five different animals. After that, they have to name the animals with their sounds. Each of the page should have a picture of an animal and two sentences relating to its characteristics. They will have to publish the scrap book in front of the class. Finally, their scrap books are displayed at the library.

Production

For production, teacher will judge the best scrap book and rewards them. This way will help the pupils to perform better in the future.

Closure Teacher shows the video of Barney and Friends to the pupils.

Set Induction

Teacher brings set scrabble to the class. Firstly, teacher explains to the pupils on how to play scrabble. By playing scrabble, it will help to enhance their vocabulary level. Also, this induction is relating to todays lesson that is choral speaking. Before they start the choral speaking, they need to increase their vocabulary level.

Presentation

We start with briefing them on choral speaking. I prepare a text on choral speaking entitled My First Love and deliver it to them (Appendix 1). We animate the right way of choral speaking by showing them the actions and expressions related to the text of the

choral speaking. This activity will help the pupils to experience the used of vocal, facial expression and gesture to convey situations character and emotions. By becoming familiar with a text, pupils will develop their comprehension skills and emotional engagement with writing. They will enjoy short story and word play.

Practice

Firstly, the pupils study the text of choral speaking. Then, they will have to perform their choral speaking presentation in the class. They have to perform it in a good way that is by showing gestures and expression correctly. By doing this activity, the pupils will understand that language especially English can be learnt in many ways like choral speaking and etc.

Production

Whole reading of the text is done in groups for teacher to check on pronunciation, intonation, expression, enunciation etc.

Closure

Teacher encourages pupils to boost up their English proficiency level.

3.0 Play PETS AND ME

ME : Eh , what a cute cat ? Oh, how I miss my little Tom. ME : I want to name it Tommy to replace my Tom. TOK WAN : Before I forget, I have something to surprise you. Come with me. ME : Wow , theres a cub there. It is very cute ! Hes moo-ing at me ! Can I name it Bobby? (Excited) TOK WAN : Yes you may, Siti. (Smiling) At Uncle Samys house. ME : Hello Uncle Samy! SAMY : Hello Siti Look what I have here. ME : A green bird! Where did you get it? SAMY : I found this bird and it was injured. So, I treated it and today I am going to let it free. ME : Oh, what a pity bird! I want to call it Molly. Hello Molly, today you can fly freely in the sky! (Waving to the bird). (The bird flies in the sky freely). TOK WAN : This is my advice for you. Do not hurt animals because they are also living things like us. You must love the animals as you love yourself. Remember my words. SITI : Yes Tok Wan. I promise I will never hurt animals and I will take care of them. Thank you Tok Wan.

Teacher shows a clip on animals as induction for the lesson. It will help the pupils to explore new knowledge on animals as well as creating an imagery lesson for their development. The animals should be contextualized so that the pupils will be able to understand better.

Presentation

Teacher introduces the puppets and their characters to the pupils. Teacher explains on how to carry out a simple puppet show. Also, teacher demonstrates a puppet show to the pupils.

Practice

Pupils have to carry out a short role play using puppet given in front of the class (Scripts in Appendix 2). The puppet show is based on the play entitled Pets and Me. Based on the theme, it help pupils to understand that we must respect other living things like animals and to love them as they love themselves.

Production Teacher checks on pupils proficiency. Besides, teacher observes the way pupils expressed their feelings while doing puppet show and enhance their talents.

Closure

Teacher asks moral values of the play.

Set Induction Teacher shows a video on jazz chant on animals. This induction will attract the pupils attention in class by listening to the rhythm of words in English.

Presentation

Teacher gives each pupils a copy of the recording script and play the recording again as they listen and read at the same time (Refer to appendix 3). Then, teacher put pupils into pairs and have them put a small circle above each word that is stressed. Check their answers, then play the recording again as they listen and check.

Practice

While singing the jazz chant, it can be accompanied by actions to represent each animal. For example, both hands flying for bird and etc.

Production

Teacher observes the pupils confident level after performing the jazz chant.

Closure

Teacher asks the moral values.
