Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training

(Listed on the SPRC best practices registry)

The Challenge
Every year more people die by suicide than from all of the armed conflicts around the world. For every suicide, there may be up to 100 times more people who are injured by nonfatal suicidal behaviors. In a given week, one in twenty, or 57% of the population, has had serious thoughts of suicide.

The Opportunity
Most people considering suicide share their distress and their intent. Thus, training in suicide intervention can: o Help you see and respond to invitations to help. o Give you the confidence to ask about suicide. o Provide you with the tools to help prevent the immediate risk of suicide.

The Outcome
ASIST is a standardized method of teaching suicide first aid. It provides a practical suicide intervention model that is applicable to caregivers with or without a background in mental health training. It has both experiential and didactic components. Evaluations have shown that the workshop: Increases caregivers knowledge and confidence Intervention skills are retained over time and used to save lives
