INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES/ SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES: Word Detective: Find words in the story they do not know and have student guess the meaning then look the words up to see if they were correct Have students find unknown words and have them make sentences- then give sentences to a partner and have them guess the meaning then look it up Mystery Words: Students are given words with the same prefixes and/or suffixes and they must figure out the meaning Highlighting Unknown Words: Instead of a book, give students a passage from an upper grade and have students read it- have them highlight unknown words and work with a partner to find meanings to the words
