1. The steel beam shown is made of a grade of steel for which y = 250 MPa and v = 400 MPa (Figure1). Using a factor of safety of 2.50, determine the largest couple that can be applied to the beam when it is bent about the x axis.

Figure 1

2. Two vertical forces are applied to a beam of the cross section shown in Figure 2. Determine the maximum tensile and compressive stresses in portion BC of the beam.

Figure 2

3. Figure 3 shows a bar having the cross section shown has been formed by securely bonding brass and aluminum stock. Using the data given below, determine the largest permissible bending moment when the composite bar is bent about a horizontal axis.

Figure 3

4. A steel bar and an aluminum bar are bonded together to form the composite beam shown. The modulus of elasticity for aluminum is 70 GPa and for steel is 200 GPa. Knowing that the beam is bent about a horizontal axis by a couple of moment M = 1500 Nm, determine the maximum stress in (a) the aluminum, (b) the steel.

Figure 4

5. A concrete floor slab is reinforced with 16-mm-diameter steel rods (Figure 5). The modulus of elasticity is 200 GPa for steel and 25 GPa for concrete. With an applied bending moment of 4.5 kNm for 0.3 m width of the slab, determine the maximum stress in the concrete and steel.
