Biology 2: Lab 5 Diffusion and Osmosis Answer Sheet

Student Name: Cells and Membranes: Short answer questions from Lab 5 cells alive. Place answer in the box below each question.
1. (Go to Immunology then Ouch..)

How does the body find, kill and eat microbes?

2. (Go to Microbiology then Heliobacter pylori.)

What causes ulcers? How are ulcers currently treated?

3. ( Go to Microbiology then Dividing Bacteria.)

Why isn't the earth covered with bacteria 100 feet deep?

4. (Go to Cell Biology then How Big.)

Give the approximate size for pollen, bacteria, red blood cells, lymphocytes and the width of a human hair.

Object Pollen

Size in micrometers (um)

Bacteria (e.coli) Bacteria (staph) Red Blood Cells Lymphocytes Human hair (w)

5. (Go to Microbiology then Parasites.)

Microbiology then Heliobacter pylori

Diffusion:

The speed of diffusion depends on several factors, including temperature. Do think a higher temperature will cause diffusion to occur more rapidly or more slowly? What is your hypothesis?

Diffusion Experiment (tea bags):

1. Fill a beaker or glass three fourths full with cold tap water. 2. Fill another beaker or glass with very hot water. 3. At the same time lower a tea bag into each of beakers or glasses. Do not mix.

Results/Observations:

Was your hypothesis correct?

What does this experiment tell you about how temperature affects the rate of diffusion?

Fish Question:
A freshwater fish has about 1% salt in his body. Freshwater is close to 0% salt. Will water move into or out of the fish?

Osmosis Egg Experiment Results:

JAR VOLUME BEFORE EGG WAS ADDED

VOLUME AFTER EGG WAS ADDED

OBSERVATIONS OF EGG

Vinegar Syrup Water

QUESTIONS: 1. When the egg was placed in the water, in which direction did the water molecules move?

2. On what evidence do you base this?

3. How do you explain the volume of liquid remaining when the egg was removed from the syrup?

4. When the egg was placed in the water after being removed from the syrup, in which direction did the water move?

5. Which of the two liquids was hypotonic?

6. On what evidence do you base this?

7. Which of the two liquids was hypertonic?

8. On what evidence do you base this?

APPLICATIONS: Using concepts developed from the two experiments, Answer the questions of application. 1. Why do grocery store owners spray fresh fruits and vegetables with water?

2. Roads are sometimes salted to melt ice. What does this do to plants around the roadside and why?

3. If a shipwrecked crew drinks sea water, they will probably die. Why?

4. If a bowl of fresh strawberries is sprinkled with sugar, a few minutes later the berries will be covered with juice. Why?

Diffusion: Discussion questions: 1. The plastic bag is permeable to which substance? 2. Why did the iodine enter the bag? 3. Why didn't the starch enter the beaker? 4. How is the plastic bag like the cell membrane?

Bonus Question: (1 pt.)

Dialysis is a technique used to purify blood in cases of Kidney failure. During dialysis, what substances would you want to remove from the bloodstream? What substances would you want to remain in the bloodstream?

1. Which of the below caused the size difference found between the two blue halos (holes 1 and 2)? A. B. C. D. Molecular Size Charge Concentration Temperature

2. Which of the below caused the size difference found between the large blue and large purple halos (holes 1 and 3)? A. B. C. D. Molecular Size Charge Concentration Temperature

3. A red blood cell in an isotonic solution will....? A. B. C. D. Expand Not change Shrivel Reproduce

Diffusion:
Questions and Conclusions 1. Define permeability

2. To which substance is the plastic bag is permeable ?

3. Why did the iodine enter the bag ?

4. Why didn't the starch enter the beaker?

5. How is the plastic bag like the cell membrane?

Application:
Cut a slice of lemon and drop it in a glass of cranberry juice. Leave it in there for at least 15 minutes. Remove it... State the color of the lemon slice and explain why it is that color.
