ADDITIONAL MATHEMATICS PROJECT WORK SPM 2/ 2012

Introduction The increase in prices of goods has always been a topic of discussion in today's society because this price increase causes an increment in the cost of living of a family. A hike in petrol price, causing food company to charge extra transportation fee, is a major factor associated with the exorbitant price of food today, The government has implemented various measures to control price increases, such as providing subsidies and list a few essential items as controlled goods in order to reduce the burden on the people. Nevertheless, consumers are also responsible for planning their family expenditure. A study could be done to have a better understanding on how a family spend their money. This study is suitable as the Project work of Additional Mathematics for SPM candidates in 2012. Aim This aim of this projeck work is aimed to investigate the rising cost of living in a family over a three-year period. Objectives of Project Work At the end of the project, you will be able to 1. Evaluate the total monthly expenses for each expense item in a family 2. calculate the rate of increase in total monthly expenses for a family in three years 3. state the priority of the familys expenditure 4. calculate the composite index of the family expenditure in 2011 based on year 2009 5. forecast or predict the index values of each item if the cost of living increases at the rate for the next three year 6. recommend ways and means to cut the cost of livng by using numerical argument

Implementation of Project Work Activity 1 : Collecting information a) You are to design a questionnaire in the form of an interview to collect information on how much is spend on at least five items of expenditure in a family (please refer Form 1 in appendix ). At least 10 respondents (preferably with family) are required for this activity. b) After collecting the information in Form 1, transfer them to Form 2 (see appendix). c) After completing the Form 2, transfer the data to the Form 3 (see appendix).

Activity 2 : Analysing the data Based on the data you collected, a) calculate the percentage of increase in expenditure for each item in 2011 based on 2009 (refer information in Form 3). b) find the expenditure index for each item. c) determine the weightage of each item in percentage. Hence, or otherwise present your weightages in the form of pie chart. (Hint : convert the values of weightages into degrees). d) find the value of expenditure composite index in the year 2011 based on year 2009. Activity 3 : Interpreting the result Based on the result in activity 2, a) describe the expenditure of each item based on the value of expenditure index you obtained. b) Make a conclusion based on the composite index of expenditure. Activity 4 : Further exploration a) In the year 2013, the cost of living is expected to increase by 20% based on year 2011. Calculate the expenditure index of each item in year 2013 based on year 2009. b) From the information in previous activity (4a), use at least two methods to find the composite index of expenditure in the year 2013 based on year 2009. c) The impact of 20% increase in expenditure index in year 2013 can be reduced by controlling expenses for the certain items. Give your suggestions on how to reduce this percentage increase of expenditure for some items. Give reason for each suggestion given. d) Show the impact of your suggestion on the composite index of expenditure.

Activity 5 : Conclusion Based on the result of this study, a) list three (3) important items in a familiy expenditure. Explain how you select these important items. b) what is the cost of living for a family in the year 2011 when compared to year 2009? c) what are the impacts on a family if the cost of living increases by 20% in 2013? d) if your suggestions are able to reduce the cost of living, how does it affect the Composite Index? e) what is the percentage of reduction in the cost of living in year 2013 if your suggestions is accepted? Reflection 1. While you were doing the project, what have you learned ? 2. List out several moral values that you practice when doing this project. 3. Present your opinions or feelings creatively concerning this project through the usage of symbols, illustrations, drawings or songs. ___________________________________________________________________________
