Optimize designs for sheet metal parts producibility

Mitac DESIGN FOR EXCELLENCE CHECKLIST

1. Minimize the number of steps for sheet metal stamping.

2. Select standard commercial, off the shelf drill rod, punch, tools related to
standard hole, slot, sheet metal thickness, bending radii.
3. Design parts so that secondary burr removal operation is not required.
(Some surfaces can have burrs others cannot.)
4. Drawings to indicate surfaces on which burrs are permissible.

5. If the part function requires a specific grain direction then this should be
indicated on the drawings.

Mitac DESIGN FOR EXCELLENCE CHECKLIST

6. Unless specified the tolerances shown on the hole diameters or contours

are considered to apply to the punch side only.
7. Corner radii should be a of 1/2 the material thickness.
8. Minimum feature section should not be less than 1.5 to 2 times material
thickness.
9. Hole diameters to be large enough to be punched. Punching being
preferable to drilling. (Cost)

Mitac DESIGN FOR EXCELLENCE CHECKLIST

10. Sharp corners to be avoided when designing openings.

11. The depth of draw to be kept shallow to minimize the number o die
operations.

12. Use embossed or gusset forms to provide rigidity and maintain

accuracy of angle of the bend.

13. two or more hols are used in mating parts it is necessary to consider
the problem of accumulated tolerances. This can be accomplished by
making the hole large enough to cover the accumulated tolerances or
elongated in the direction of relative movement

14. Holes from edges to be ateast 3t+R from the edge where t is the
thickness of the material and R is the bend radii of the corner. Drawn
holes should be a minimum 6t spacing inside edge to edge.

15. Provide bending relief of 1 1/2 to 2t when required.

16. Bending radius to be mimimum 1 1/2 T + R

To optimize design for plastic parts.

Mitac DESIGN FOR EXCELLENCE CHECKLIST

1. Select the plastic material that matches its function in the product.

2. Use the values in published data sheets for reference only, specs
to reflect actual requirements.

3. Design of experiment should be used to set up process settings

to control tolerances. (eg temperature / pressure/shaft size).

Mitac DESIGN FOR EXCELLENCE CHECKLIST

1. Design parts for uniform cross section, thickness and radii.

2. Design features so that material flow will be in one direction only.

3. Drawings to indicate allowable warpage on flat surfaces.

Mitac DESIGN FOR EXCELLENCE CHECKLIST

4. Consider adding ribs along the edge or cooling fixtures to

maintain flatness.

5. Indicate location of gates and injector pins on the drawings.

6. Gates

should be on the top side of the mold.

Mitac DESIGN FOR EXCELLENCE CHECKLIST

7. Thickness of the adjacent walls and ribs should be 60% of the

thickness of main bodies.

8. Critical dimensions for features relating to mating of parts to be

clearly identified on the drawings.

9. For tapered parts dimension critical to the function of the part to be

marked on the drawing allowing non critical dimensions to be
adjusted for process optimization.
